2024-25 SFCU Player of the Season (vs Brisbane & Auckland open now)

Welcome to the 14th season of the SFCU Player of the Season Award, voted by SFCU members.

VOTE HERE

How it works:

  • After each match, a poll will go up on the front page of SFCU to vote for your players of the match. You must be an SFCU user to vote. If you select “Remember me” when logging in to the SFCU front page, you should stay logged in for a year.
  • If you have trouble voting via the front page, feel free to PM your votes to me and I’ll make sure they get counted.
  • Every vote that you submit will earn you an entry into our end-of-season prize draw! (prize TBC)
  • You have 6 points to allocate to players who appeared for Sydney in the match, in any way you see fit. You can give all 6 to a single player, 1 point each to six different players, whatever.
  • Your votes only count if you allocate all 6 points. A note should appear to indicate that your votes have been submitted successfully.
  • Voting will close about a week after the match.
  • The top 3 players in each match will receive 3-2-1 points respectively for the Player of the Season tally. Tied players will share the available points equally.
  • After each round, the top 3 players will be announced. Towards the end of the season (specifically, after Round 14 of the A-League), only the Player of the Match will be announced, while 2nd and 3rd place will be kept secret so that the full result isn’t known until the end of the season.
  • Matches in the 2024 Australia Cup, the 2024–25 A-League Mens season and the 2024–25 AFC Champions League Two will count towards the 2024–25 SFCU Player of the Season Award.
  • At the end of the season, the full votes from every match will be made publicly available.

Thought I would get this started with just three weeks to go until the season officially kicks off.

I’m keen to hear any feedback about the voting / award, in particular anything that might entice you to vote more often.

Feel free to post your thoughts in this thread, but I’ve also set up a quick anonymous survey (only 6 questions) if you prefer.

Can Lolley turn it into the Darrell Lea candyshop with a hattrick of wins?

I absolutely PROMISE this year I will vote in all the matches. I felt like an absolute fraud last season winning the prize after only voting in a handful of games (but still gladly accepted the prize )

He would have to be short odds to go 3 in a row

Wait, there was a prize? Why didn’t I know about the prize? I want to know and understand more about the prize.

Wait, all this time you’ve been voting out of the goodness of your own heart… like a sucker?

There’s not much to tell, it’s not for “most creative/smartest/dedicated/… voter”; the main rule is in bold in the first post:

It’s been happening for the past five seasons. There were three winners in the first season, but it got a bit expensive so there’s just one now. Once I sent a shirt off to Switzerland, and the season before last, @jubal1’s platinum membership paid off for him to win it.

The survey is going really well so far

If you haven’t had the chance to respond yet, I’d appreciate a few more

Responded to your survey.

I tried to vote in as many matches as possible. Reasons why I dont…

  • I forget (despite reminders…)
  • We played so shite that I feel nobody deserved even a post-game Powerade.
  • A combination of above.

I pledge to try and vote in every game this upcoming season, and should there be any performances I don’t feel voteworthy, I’ll award points to somebody who came on so late they had no impact on the overall result.

Or perhaps put ‘The Cove/Travelling Support’ as an option.

I like the current format… the traditional 321 means you find yourself voting for someone because you have to allocate one point to someone… being able to assign points means you can award based on your opinion

I always get distracted when it makes me sign in again to vote…

Done this a few times.

That was my main bit of feedback. I always carry on with it but I think there’d be a fair few that get lost at that point.

All depends on when I am voting… if it is after I have watched a game on Tv its less of an issue but getting home with the kids and doing it on the phone it becomes an issue

I’ve said before that it would be nice to have a 0 option. That way we’ve still voted, but would at least be able to show displeasure on team shittness. That or have an option to vote minuses to the Manager…

I understand the sentiment, but the way the voting works, this is kinda like not putting preferences for candidates you don’t like in an election: someone’s still going to get elected (MOTM) and you’re just leaving the decision to the people who could be bothered voting (allocating all 6 points).

I’ve set it up like that because I think all matches should count equally, but maybe people disagree.

A couple of options that I think would have the desired effect:

  • Bring back the “Arlo” option for the allocation of protest votes (the ultimate effect of this is the possibility that instead of the top three getting 3-2-1, the top two could get 2-1 for player of the season)

  • Allow voting as usual, but have an additional field where you can rate the match (on importance / quality / performance) in general, which could be used for weighting the 3-2-1 points. So the best performance of the year could allocate the top three 6-4-2 and the worst might be 1-0.67-0.33.

Keen to hear opinions on these

The issue with logging in has been heard loud and clear - it is sometimes a problem for me when setting up the poll too.

I do want to have a system that allows me to keep track of who’s submitting votes. Mainly to avoid multiple voting, but also to facilitate the prize draw.

I will investigate the possibility of having something integrated into the forum rather than the front page, given that staying logged in seems easier here. But I don’t think it will be straightforward, and definitely won’t be ready for the start of the season.

(There is always the option of PMing me your votes directly, if the front page is bring painful)

The login issue is mildly annoying, but (and I don’t know if this the same for everyone or just me) what usually happens is:

  1. Rowdy posts the vote link in the match day thread
  2. I click that link and I have to login
  3. After login I land on a page of the main site that isn’t the vote page
  4. I then close that page and return to the forum
  5. I click the same vote link again, and now because I’m logged in I get the vote page

I don’t so much mind having to login each time, but it would be good if post-login it redirects to the vote page you were trying to access.

That’s not possible, we don’t have that degree of control over landing pages

I wonder where it does send you. Because even though the voting link takes you directly to that post, the post is also (pretty much) always at the top of the front page (www.sfcu.com.au) so while that seems like the obvious landing place, you just need to click into it. Would save one or two clicks in the process above

Nah keep it simple I reckon. A good performance is a good performance even if it’s a crap game.
