A-League Season Predictions - 2021/22

The classic SFCU pre-season predictions thread returns. Time to nail your thoughts to the mast. Nine months from now people will either marvel at your prescient understanding of Australian football or laugh at your ill-informed naivety.

For those who want to study the form guide…

A new feature this year will be an end of season tally of predictions. Rules for scoring. I will enter all team predictions into a spreadsheet and calculate the difference from the actual team positions. So, if you predict that Sydney will be 1 on the table and we win the premiership, then you will score 0. In the same scenario, if you predict Sydney would be second on the table then you will score 1, and so on. The total difference for all 12 teams was added up and the person with the lowest score will be the winner. For tied results, the number of correct predictions will act as a tie breaker.

Random predictions for this season: Perth Glory is force to relocate after WA refuses to open its borders

This season seems really up in the air. City look great but after that- we have an aging squad and going more of the same again, Western have recruited probably the best visa player combo but Aloisi has never impressed before in the league. Perth/Victory/Wanderers/Macarthur have all made some reasonable signings but have some gaps in their squad. Roar have some players that can go either way, Adelaide havent really made any moves. Mariners and Jets have too many “could be great might be a huge flop” signings to know where theyll be and Nux are so up against it in the market losing Davilla and Hemed but not able to replace them. Ill probably edit a few times before the season starts but:

Random predictions for this season:

The new partnership with Para+ will usher in a new era of footballing dominance in Australia that will directly lead to an enhanced international effort to combat global warming, a lasting peace in the Middle East, the overthrow of Authoritriansim wherever it exists and improved stadium food.

Ninkovic and Wilkinson to retire.

The FA will mishandle the current problem with the Malidas but overall governance of football within Australia will improve.

If the Wanderers can finish in the top four this season then the first Derby at the new Stadium will be a cracker.

I reckon each lot of 3 on my ladder are interchangeable. Top 3 could swap around. Us and City will be consistent, and Popovic first seasons are usually good, it’s the second seasons that fall apart.

I reckon Aloisi will have learned something in his time away, and he’s got a handy team. Perth will have the glam factor, but won’t go that high because Garcia isn’t a great coach. Adelaide will have few draws and just win/lose every game and end upper midtable.

Macarthur in a bit of turmoil at the moment, Wanderers will fuck up somehow, Brisbane have made some underwhelming signings and I can’t see them working well.

Wellington will suffer this year, lost a lot of quality. Mariners without Staj probably going to suffer. Newcastle i actually have no idea how they’ll go, but I put them down here because it’s a safe bet.

Aloisi will be sacked first, and Sydney FC will announce that all members seats will come with complimentary cup holders for their $9.00 cup of luke warm mid-strength beer/goon wine in the new stadium.

Random predictions for this season:

Sydney related

  • we see the retirement of Ninko before the end of the season due to injury
  • Kamsoba kills it at Sydney forcing these forums to melt down
  • King becomes the best left back in the league
  • the Hoff gets injured again and once again can’t live up to his potential
  • Yazbek explodes onto the scene and is the next Hoff
  • Retre gets a long term injury. With retre and the Hoff injured we bolster our midfield stock by signing Adrian in Jan
  • Cacares scored the Sydney and A-league goal of the season.
  • We lose the semi

Non-Syd

  • WSW get a lucky run in the ffa cup and win it by beating the only a-league team they meet in the final
  • Victory return to power with some ugly popovic ball, but it gets them results.
  • Victory average 20k attendance over the season
  • Jets are diabolical and post a new record for fewest points in a season
  • Canberra and Wollongong are announced as the next two teams to enter the comp in the 22/23 season
  • WSW set the record for most combined goals scored and conceded
  • There is a genuine effort by the administrators to get active fans back
  • We have the best season in recent memory and there is the constant question being asked by fans across the league as to how this will get fucked
  • A regular season game gets an attendance of over 40k
  • A COVID outbreak in a team forces them to field their youth team, who manage to win.

If we finish second, we don’t play city in the semi.

Good point. Fixed.

By way of a bump for this topic; remember to add your End of Season Predictions before the start of the season if you want to be in the competition for Best SFCU Predictor for 2021/22. You don’t have to predict the Grand Final winner or Best New Signing, but you do have to post your End of Season Standings to be in the running.

I have entered the current posters into my spreadsheet and the current collective wisdom of SFCU is making the following end of season prediction.

Fuck yeah, starting off with a win

Only one way from here though

This season could be tighter than some others if Pappas can set the Jets up well. and Talay can recover from all the squad losses. I think my predictions of table order last season were close to the worst on the thread. So, time to try again:
