ALM Squad Speculation Thread 2024/25 (Part 1)

No, he has his place. It’s just not as a first choice 9 at this stage.

Mak had 3 from 8 games up front this season and 6 from 14 games on the left. He can do a decent job up top if ALF goes but hes a far better winger. That said the option of giving Wood, Segecic and Kucharski an actual crack and squad role rather than bit part player excites me

I think it excites most fans as well from what I can tell - just whether many Sydney FC are willing to sacrifice being a front runner in this league whilst the young guys find their groove (if they do) is an entirely different prospect.

If we adjust expectations to being a top 6 club with the aim of getting top 4 on the back of a lot of young guys in the team and using wingers as strikers, then it could be a lot of fun. How many SFC fans do we honestly think would actually be willing to do this?

Not many.

What about assists or chances created for those blocks of games?

Goals are great, but if he had 12 assists from 14 games in that second stint and 0/8 for the first we’re actually better off with him out wide (note: purely made up stats).

If any.

I don’t know anybody…

It would be nice to have one potential no.9 who could head goals on a semi-regular basis. Despite Alf not being tall, he has a good leap and good ability to direct the ball. I joked (above) about Giroud but imagine, given the number of crosses our wide players put in, how many more goals we would have had with eg Zawada or Ibasuki up front. When Alf is out, Grant is our best option for scoring from high crosses.

Balotelli would be a good fit

Would just about take that squad over our current one. Imagine the foreigners you could add with all the home grown cap concessions.

Wow we really don’t have much to work with here.
Anyone got any other rumours besides Dan Hall possibly coming in?
Wonder how well move on some of the deadwood.

call them cocksuckers till they leave?

This is the thing. Where is the dead wood really?

THB, who is gone. Donachie, sure. But tbh he’s not that easy to replace.

Other than that, probably Parsons? And that’s about it. Not a lot to really change the makeup of the squad…

I think we can pretty safely predict a 4th-6th place finish for the upcoming ALM season.

I wonder how ALF’s loan works with the Loyalty Player Allowance.

Technically he has been contracted with us continuously since 2018, which would make 2023-24 his sixth season and 30% outside the cap…

I suspect loaning him out resets the clock on that. That said, there’s a lot of ways his wage could be accounted for - it’s probably not the money that’s the issue.

It’s the foreign spot.

People calling for Wood to get an extended number of starts. Why?

I was happy for him to get more of a go when it looked like ALF was just about done and nothing was going right for him, but if we’re in a position where we’re starting Wood out of choice it’s a sign that we’re happy with being mid-table. The same people calling for it will be calling for the manager’s head by about round 8.

If we’re in a position where the whole team is buzzing, Wood will get his fair share of tap ins but you can’t really bank on that. You could see how much better a team we were when ALF started getting into some OK form, Wood provides none of that dynamism.
