Australian National Team Thread - #PopaOut!

No VAR otherwise Jordan would have had a penalty & Mabils goal would have been called offside.

Anyone watch the full game?

Just watched the replay. Pretty tame affair. Zero urgency or spark. Admittedly it was a glorified training run but they’d need to lift considerably to get past UAE, not to mention Peru. Can’t see it happening myself.

How was Genreau when he came on?

It was our B team of sorts. Getting legs for players.

Really no need to prepare, tbh.

UAE and Peru are no Japan and Saudi Arabia.

We can just rock up and be fine.

No better or worse than anyone else. No one really stood out and said “you gotta pick me coach!” Was a bit disappointing in that regard.

Peru beat New Zealand 1 0 in a friendly in neutral Spain. I didnt catch the game, but I think it reflects just how poor Peru are. I know its a terrible Australian side right now, but I still think we have a very good chance at qualification.

UAE should be counting their blessings, their first ever world cup on the way!

They qualified in 1990.

I would like to think this shows how closely I’m following the Socceroos and their opponents

I hope I’m wrong, but I can’t see us getting past UAE, let alone Peru.

Their warm-up friendly was at home against Gambia (ranked 125th? in the world).

They drew 1-1 and only managed to score through a penalty…

Peru meanwhile had a win 1-0 over New Zealand, in Spain…

These guys are hardly unstoppable juggernauts.

Yes but we beat Jordan in a very unconvincing manner. I wouldn’t exactly say we looked like a team whose qualification was pretty much on the line in a few days, and chomping at the bit to make sure we didn’t just get the job done, but did the job emphatically. It was a very flat performance, and had VAR been used, we would have probably lost courtesy of the referee messing a blatant penalty and our second goal being offside.

We also historically suck in the Middle East.

UAE and Peru are hardly unstoppable, but we are not exactly in a position to boast ourselves. Peru beat us pretty comfortably in the World Cup back in 2018.

I just hope they look like they give a shit

I hear you, but we just look so disconnected on the pitch these days.
We were lucky to beat Jordan the other day (VAR would have resulted in a two goal swing against us), and we haven’t really played well away from home in a long long time.
As I said, I hope I’m wrong. Missing the WC would be a disaster.

It was pretty much our B team. And I’d say Jordan are a fair bit better than Gambia.

It doesn’t matter about being convincing any more. It’s about can we get a result. That is all.

And against these teams, we definitely can.

We can get a result against anybody. We’ve beaten the likes of Brazil, Germany in the past.

On paper, we should be comfortably putting teams like the UAE to the sword. And in the past, we have.

However, in recent times we’ve scraped draws against Saudi Arabia, China, and Oman. And they’re nations we really shouldn’t be worried about getting a result against.

Underestimate the UAE, as I feel we have with similar nations at our own peril.

Of course we shouldn’t underestimate them, but overestimating them doesn’t do me any good either.

And comparing them to Germany or Brazil is just hysterical.

And we’re hardly impervious objects.

I watched the match and it was hardly neutral. There were 32,000 Peruvians there. Peru dominated the first half and really dropped of in the second with their only gol coming from an embarrassing Oliver Sail blooper.

I follow the peruvian NT closely, they are quality side and are in the midst of a ‘golden era’. They are well coached and I cant see them missing out on the next world cup.

I am in Peru atm and to say the public are extremely nervous of the match with Australia is an understatement. Peru have a long history of choking in world cup qualifiers and people expect this to continue. I’m constantly reminding people that we still have a qualifying match with UAE.
