Australian National Team Thread - #PopaOut!

I genuinely think that operational familiarity with the conditions (that is to say a set of routines and processes built up over the last decade and a half to maximise performance) is going to be a game changer for us, and made a big difference in the playoff against Peru.

We won’t love it any more than anyone else, but we’ll know what to do, and older players will mentor the kids who’ve not been there much.

It’s worth mentioning that temperatures in November in Qatar are generally below 30C and humidity is generally less than 40%

What Paulska said.
I mean, Fuck the Qatar WC, but I’m not sure how hugely different the climate will be from a lot of other world cups, due to the change to November.

For example the average high in Doha when the WC kicks off is around 28 degrees, with the 90th percentile around 31. Temperatures should then cool over the month of the tournament.

Looking ahead to 4 years time, by the time the final comes around, the numbers are actually similar or worse in the venues I checked - LA, NY, Houston. Surprisingly those in Mexico are not so bad, and unsurprisingly the Canadian host cities should be much milder. But a lot of the cities would expect much hotter temperatures than 2022 is likely to experience.

So I think there are a lot of valid criticisms of this awful WC, including the outright lie that it wouldn’t be moved from its usual time of year, but now that it’s in November, I wouldn’t expect temperature to be one of those reasons.

Didn’t most of Europe just come out of an abnormally hot summer?

Tommy Oar leaving Sainsbury out of his squad is class.

It amazes me how much time is spent discussing temperatures for the Qatar World Cup using summer information that is irrelevant.

The weather will be lovely. That’s why it’s being held in November and not June.

Average highs of close to 30 degrees isn’t exactly lovely to play football in. Though its not like we haven’t had world cups in hotter countries before.

30C with low humidity is easier to deal with. When we think of 30C, we think of 80-100% humidity which is unbearable. I’ve done December/January in Perth and even with 40C temps, it was easier to deal with than 30C in Brisbane.

Mexico 86 and USA 94 had midday kickoffs to suit the European TV market.

We’re really clutching at straws to gain an advantage if we’re relying on the local climate to do us a favour. We just need to find a way to reduce the frequency of Mbappe (and others) running rings around our back line.

Average temp is 24 in November. It’s not 30 degrees 24/7. Only the 1pm kick offs in the group stage will be played in anything close to that temperature

nah, witch doctor

We could be hoping the local culture gives us an advantage?
