Rohan Dennis doing it when it doesn’t matter again…
Also, what’s going on with Phil Liggett? I think his age is finally showing.

I’ve continued my good form, coming 1st on the prologue of the Volta a Portugal.
I had the top 5 as well as the 8th & 11th placed riders.
Only need to hold on for 10 stages now!
Rob Arnold seems to have been leaked a few names for the Aussie mens team for the World Champs coming up in Wollongong. Matthews, Hindley, O’Connor and Haussler in. Haig out (injuries). Also saw an article on reddit saying Ewan is confirmed out based on form and the course.
Anyone got plans to head down? Jealous I’ll miss it.
Evenepoel is incredible. What a season. Assuming he wins it from here, it’s the first time since Hinault apparently that someone won a monument, a GT and the Worlds.
Yeah what a freak. Bit of an error letting him get up the road so easily though? Not sure. I guess Belgium were just stacked with two huge favourites so kind of damned if you do and damned if you don’t.
Crazy sprint for silver and bronze too. Nice to see Matthews make the podium in his home race.
I think the lack of team radios also helps in that situation.
It takes a little bit longer to organise a chase as the riders in the peloton have to do it themselves and that extra bit of time is all someone like Remco needs.
So it looks like Greenedge are bringing Matthews back for a full swing through the Australian summer of cycling for the first time in ten years. Would be great to see him pick up the green and gold jersey at the Nationals for the first time. Might be able to do something interesting at Cadel’s Race for the first time too. By bringing Yates along to the TDU as well you can see they’re taking their home race very seriously. Good way to get some early WT points and avoid the relegation scrap from last year.
Finally bit the bullet and signed up to GCN+. No Eurosport and SBS scaling back on cycling means I just couldn’t find another way to keep up with the sport. Plus every race has lovely 25 minute highlight videos.
Anyway, Paris-Nice has been tremendously entertaining this year. Huge statement from Pogacar putting 40 seconds into Vingegaard. Not sure what I think of the new Team Time Trial rules though, I quite like the third or fourth rider to finish is the time that counts rule. Every rider getting their own time makes it much more like a practice sprint lead out.
I’m not sure if anyone has been watching the Giro but it has been an absolutely cursed race. Terrible weather has led to some big crashes across almost every stage so far, including Geogenhart getting carted off in an ambulance last night. They have also had to change the queen stage because they can’t access the highest climb. On top of that huge numbers of riders getting covid, including Evenopoel.
I’ve been trying to watch it as best I can.
I catch the start on On Demand then switch to SBS when the TV coverage starts. After that I fall asleep and generally wake up with 10kms to go.
The weather on Stage 10 was horrendous. The torrential rain made it bad enough but then throw in the single digit temperatures, I don’t think I’ve ever seen riders get hypothermia before.
It will be interesting to see what they do over the next couple of days as they’re heading in the region that is being impacted by the flooding that has seen the F1 GP cancelled this weekend.
And just like that tonight’s stage is halved, finishing after the first climb with no summit finish.
Weren’t there meant to be three climbs?
I knew they cut the first climb down but this is news…
Oh hang on I misread it, they’re cutting the first half not the last half.

Honestly, I think they should cancel the Giro.
There’s far better ways that Italy should be concentrating its focus, particularly in the case of it’s emergency services, than running a bike race right now.
Go back a little over 12 months and of the same thing was happening here I’d be furious.
You were right they removed 120km.
2.8km to go this early….
They haven’t started tonight, are you watching the replay of last night’s stage now on sbs?
I’m just watching Viceland and could have sworn it was different to the highlights I watched this morning!
I’ve also had too many beers…
Gino Mader has died after his crash in the final of yesterday’s stage of the Tour De Suisse.
The race doctor revived him in the immediate aftermath of the crash but it’s just been announced that he died overnight.
Looks like they’re still going ahead with today’s stage but I don’t know how the riders can do it.
Ah that’s such sad news, RIP. I’ve not been watching the race, but the report was that he was found unconscious and submerged in water after the crash? Jesus, what a way to go. They’ve just announced that they will only ride the last 30 km and it will be neutralised.
RIP, absolutely shocking news. It sounds like it was a rough crash and on the descent it’s hard to get the support there quickly.
