Everything is on fire - the US politics thread

If only the whole world was watching CNBC back in January we could have nipped this whole COVID thing in the bud right then.
Begs the question, if the head of the Senate Intelligence Committee was so concerned of the impact of COVID back in January he sold millions of dollars worth of shares, why didnā€™t the USA take any meaningful action for almost 3 months?

Holy shit it just gets better and better. Trump is apparently going to sign an executive order of some sorts, to go after social media after having a go at them for fact checking his tweets without showing evidence that what he said was falseā€¦

At least hes addressing the big issues facing his country at the moment

there is definitely no race issues, a massive mishandling of a pandemic or an election approaching

the irony is just amazing. People are criticizing Instagram for infringing on free speech, even though them saying a fact is false, is literally a form of free speech. Trump preventing that goes directly against itā€¦ Not to mention the whole private company etc thing

Is the US military being the voice of reason in all this madness?

Trump gets the riot squad out for photo ops in front of churches, meanwhile in Aus some barefooted chap tells ScoMo to get off his lawn. One of these countries is supposedly the land of the free.

Did Minnesota really vote for dismantle the police force? They donā€™t actually ā€œdismantleā€ it as such do they. That just seems weird.

Thought I heard something about that. All that will happen is they will re-brand it, give it changed duties and most likely ham-string the force even more. I think the problem with US PDs is more a systemic issue with their society and people involved making decisions.

It generally comes down to the fact that guns are legal and so many people can walk around with them. How many Police shootings are there in Australia? The low numbers are generally due to the fact that Police here donā€™t have to carry guns as part of their general duties and even if they do, the first response is generally taser or pepper spray purely as the chances of an assailant having a gun is low.

US, with the high likelyhood of someone with a gun, added to the fact that there is inherent racism and the low threshold to become an officer in the US, you have a systemic issue.

The idea is to start again from scratch.

It has occured in other cities relatively recently, such as Camden, New Jersey in 2013.

Everyone having guns, plus obviously lacking any escalation of force regulations and training mean every negative interaction jumps straight to excessive force. Zero grappling training also means they go straight to the hip when not required.

I think there is also the difference that much of senior policing in Australia is taught at the University level and that street level police here receive more frequent and better quality training on de-escalating situations.

Warrior training. Why do cops need warrior training?

Throw in the fact that our politics are way more central with the general population being even more central and will support policies from either side, which means people wonā€™t blindly follow in the same way they do in America. Plenty of their senior figures will make major political decisions based on party rules than anything else. The level of hypocrisy in America is amazing. Just reading through Fox News comments. Republicans defending Trump for his Bible photo and then having a huge go at Democrats for staging an 8 minute kneel. I mean both happened literally within a week of each other, both are photo opportunities yet one is justified while the other is despicable. Throw in the fact that one didnā€™t throw in tear gas to make it happenā€¦

Something is going on in Seattle.

God bless their cheesy pop hearts.

Seems that once the police stood back things de-esecalated and it was calmer overnight.

Seemed odd that the police abandonded the East Precinct, almost like they were daring the protesters to trash/burn the station.

The car/shooter incident feels really off.

Iā€™ve not looked at it deeply, but my favourite anarchist Youtuber thought it was a trap, and the shooter having a brother who worked at the East Precinct seems like an odd reasoning.
