Yeah its unique to Australians and only came into effect as part of the US/AUS free trade agreement.
I suspect he may have been questioned on some of his living circumstances, which probably left the customs agent thinking he planned to stay in the US indefinitely. Its really important to stress that you are aware you are here temporarily and provide proof that you have roots to Australia during your visa application/renewal, as well as when questioned by customs agents when enterting the US.
US customs agents have always been pretty strict on this, even pre trump. However, I suspect its even more strict now.

God the way the Trump cabinet is going on about the guy the mistakenly deported to El Salvador is just mental. The judge told them they need to facilitate his return, yet they’re still arguing that the Judge has no right to tell them to do it, as it’s a matter of foreign policy. Mind you they’ve admitted they fucked up, accept that he needs to come back, they just don’t want to do it… I’m assuming they’ve found out he’s died in prison and don’t want it to become public knowledge.
I suspect the exact same thing. I was on an E3 for two cycles and my lawyers always instructed me that, if asked, to state that I had no intention to stay here permanently and I was expecting to leave at the end of my visa period.

Trump is defying a 9-0 ruling from his own stacked Supreme Court to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from El Salvador. Scenes from the oval office were sickening, even by the standards set by this regime.
Steven Miller trying to spin it as a 9-0 win for foreign policy, President Bukele from El Salvador being entirely complicit, Trump blaring OUT LOUD that he’d like to see similar treatment (deportation without due process) for US citizens accused of crime, followed by the usual berating and silencing of the few remaining press pool members who dare ask actual questions.
ABC News Breakfast used vision of this exact scene… and the only thing that got a mention here was the latest tariff nonsense.
The guy is dead. They just don’t want to admit it. Otherwise why would it be such a huge problem? That or he will be dead if he could potentially reveal a whole load of illegal shit that’s probably occurring in those deportations.

For sure they’re potentially hiding the aftermath. The mistakes have been admitted, legal arguments thereafter were undertaken in bad faith, but now they’re simply refusing to comply having lost 9-zip to that SC.
Imo this was just their chosen test case. When there’s no mechanism for accountability here then US democracy is dead and the full blown descent into fascism cannot be denied (but yes, thankfully the Westminster system is more robust, you pedantic surly prick).
