Follow follow follow - the Corica thread

Something like this I guess:

We tried to sign Mertens, but that fell through, and after not really having any other options we had to settle on [checks notes] “Joe Lolley”… haha, Lolley, I’m sure our fans will make lots of puns with that name, I’ll check out SFCU tonight.

We didn’t have a left footed left back who could nail a cross after January, and Rhyno was still struggling to recover from Covid. A front 3 of Narsingh, ALF and Buhagiar has three right feet, so you’re getting the worst of both worlds in that there’s nobody to cut in from the right to shoot on their left and nobody to cross. Not to mention the midfield 3 without Brattan and Yaz with less experience, a lot hinges on his fitness this season.

This thread is surprisingly quiet.

Most of us have accepted what needs to be done.

Should of been when we couldn’t beat an injury striken Hoang Anh Gia Lai twice.

It’s very sad that it has ended up like this, he has been here since day dot.

Is it true that he did not go over to fans or the Cove for at least a clap? Disrespectful in my opinion, many of our fanbase having been following him blindly and after the support that has been shown this season by the fans.

Yeah, I’ve defended him for a long time. But it’s time for a new era.

Have nothing against him sticking around the club, but he should go try his hand overseas for a bit. Bit more experience.

I think many here are simply blaming the coach. I think the whole package needs to be looked at. Recruiting, scouting, long term vision, youth development with integration to the top team to guess a few.
The coach/manager will probably be the most important in conducting many of these things, however it is not a one man show.
Credit for success is deserved by many, likewise failure is not always the responsibility of a single person.

So what you’re saying is we need to do our traditional raid on Gosford?

Recruitment and scouting is Corica’s job along with his staff and we have integrated plenty of youth.

It is purely Corica and his crew that need to go

It’s never just the coaches job. There’s always push and pull frpm the board in varying degrees. ADP was a board signing not a coach signing

Agree. This issue is that we don’t know, so it’s difficulty to judge him in recruitment alone.

I would suggest you raid Gosford for methods and approach rather than just players.

There are lessons to be learned there in how, what was a financial and football dumpster fire, has been turned into a potentially very successful club with limited finances.
That success is not down to one individual or any one signing.

I would not suggest that one size fits all but after having sat through 4-5 years of dark misery and torture, the sunshine of the last couple have made me like a “born again” in my faith in their approach.

I agree. I actually thought we were the better side, not because we’re played too well, but because they’re mediocre and set up to just try and nullify us, which meant we had more possession.

They had better tactics to block our play. Press us hard everywhere and completely snuff out the middle and not let us play.

The number of unforced errors or misplaced passes was out of control. As for them, their actual game wasn’t that much better given that we don’t have any defenders. Their goal was one players flash of brilliance along with some odd defending on the counter that started from them managing to intercept a through ball almost by accident if I recall correctly that looked quite dangerous almost on their 18. That then let them move quickly through the transition. Fuck I miss having the Adrian days when we would just kill teams on the transition

For our throw ins there were no options for our players to throw to, or even to do something once they could get the ball. It was all very static and bogged down.

I’m not sure their squad is actually much better if at all but they clearly had better plans/motivation and that is down to the manager. If you take into account all our errors they’re not miles ahead of us, but there’s something not gelling that’s of concern.

Good to see the kids getting time, tho.

IF the club was to make a decision to tear up the contract during the WC break, how quickly would we expect it to be announced?

I’m not sure there are any structural issues at the club tbh. We have excellent pathways, develop plenty of players - we are never going to be able to keep them all, and inevitably there’ll be some dud calls made. There were four SFC juniors in the starting XI last night, and another three came off the bench (includes Burgess who obviously had time away).
I’d also argue that CCM and SFC would have very different definitions of “very successful”, given the market size (which isn’t being snarky). The club needs to balance player development and winning trophies consistently - being competitive isn’t enough.

What’s of more issue is the retention and recruitment decisions at senior level, and the football the seniors play, which is currently absolute garbage.
That’s all on the coaching staff imo.
No need to tear up the blueprints of the whole club, we just need a better football team.

Very true. It’s was vastly different in the Farina era when there really were some issues, but a lot has changed since then. I mean, we’ve had about 8 years of being very stable, winning 7 trophies and not sacking a coach. If there were systemic issues at the club, there’s no way it could have had that much success.

I think Corica has just reached his current limits as a coach with this club. He’ll improve over time through his career, but at this point, at Sydney FC, he’s just struggling. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a chance that if he stays, he’ll be able to rescue the season. The January transfer window could allow for singing a strong CB, and with the work cup break, the team might improve in the new system. It’s just less likely.

Yeah I think he’s done. I doubt they’ll make a change in the break, but it’s just delaying the inevitable I fear.
Sad really - there’s a good reason why he was on the banner last night.

I think he’ll be gone in the off-season. We’ll finish 6th and lose in the first week of finals, and that will be that.

I’d even consider muscunt if he was to come back that’s how bad it’s become.
