Happened again way more recently than that, including Chinese swimmers (women) that came from nowhere and smashed world records in the 90’s. Everyone knew they were on the juice.
Russia in the last decade too.

Didn’t the Chinese at the time say the swimmers were so huge because they ate turtle soup?
I can’t believe we’re already at the halfway mark of this Olympics.
I mean I’ve probably watched 10 hours a day but it’s still never enough, and I am nowhere near ready for the last couple of days where things are all wrapping up, and then suddenly it’s over again.
Can I just say at this point say again - fuck channel 9. Useless.
This morning I just wanted to watch the women’s 100 metre heats. The one thing you wouldn’t do is package all those heats into a single video. Instead make me find and watch 8 separate clips. That’s before getting into the actual coverage where commentators would rather talk about a single american sprinter across all the heats rather than properly identify the athletes in the race your’re watching.
Fucking useless.
So glad I don’t have to bother with channel 9 at all, Stan Sports has been class.
Even gives you the option to skip the introductions and go straight to them jumping in!
British runner disqualified from the 100m for one false start. Very harsh
He was way under the threshold of 0.1 though. Apparently they changed it after Beijing based on data from 1000 different sprinters.
Feel sorry for him though, all that work to not even get to race.
It’s been one false start for a while now, no?
That was my understanding.
Spain DQ’d in the 4 x 100m mens medley relay heats, with the final swimmer off the blocks before the previous swimmer touched…
Two women false started in one of the 100 heats overnight and got warnings only.
I didn’t see that, but I’m assuming it has something to do with the below:
“ A false start - defined as when an athlete sets off within 0.1 seconds of the gun - results in a diagonal red and black card being shown and automatic disqualification.
This was the fate that befell Team GB sprinter Jeremiah Azu in the heats of the 100m at Paris 2024, whose reaction time of 0.073 earned him a red and black card, despite his protestations.
According to IAAF guidelines, a yellow card is only used when athletes are found to delay or disrupt the start of a race before the gun has gone off.
This can include disturbing athletes while in their blocks by making noise, or coming out of their ‘set’ position to standing.
Like in most other sports, two yellow cards to the same athlete will result in a red card, and thus disqualification.
The Aussies take gold in the men’s doubles at Roland Garros - 6-7, 7-6, 10-8
Over the fucken yanks too, if you don’t mind!
After being a set and a break down as well.
I mean, take it, but that’s a dogshit way to win a tournament. Get to 6-6 in a proper 3rd set before that 10 point tie-break wank, it’s a bit shit to go straight to it at one set all.
Just on the Algerian boxer again. Apparantly from reddit but seems the best summary of this shit I’ve read on the topic.
I think he misses the point by a fair way. He blames the IOC but I’m not sure for what. I thought they had a bit of a pass the buck attitude for sure but to make them the fall-guy for the lunatic scum trying to whip up a lynch mob is pretty weak.
He also states:
At last year’s world championships Lin took a swab test which, according to the International Boxing Association (IBA), indicated the presence of sufficient male chromosomes to disqualify her from the women’s event.
… which there doesnt seem to be evidence of other than the word of the IBA president who provides no evidence of what test was even conducted.
Another person who deserves our sympathy is Turdibekova, Lin’s opponent in Paris, a 22-year-old Uzbek whose hero is Muhammad Ali and whose dream is to win a gold medal. That will not happen here. Lin took the fight in a routine points decision and will move on to fight in the last 16. At the end she was pursued towards the safety of the players’ area by a swarming media crew, before exiting without saying a word.
Then straight up buys the line that they (Lin & Khelif) basically shouldn’t be there and it’s unfair on their opponents that they have to fight them after stating that both women were born female, lived their whole life as women, and aren’t trans.
Poor journalism in my opinion.
Doubles is the same in non-Olympic tournaments?
Mens waterpolo team looking like they’ll finish 2nd in their pool - impressive considering they beat Serbia and Hungary to get there.
