It's OK to be White and other dogwhistles - the Australian politics thread

Temu Trump now going after the Greens for organising a fundraiser on Anzac day and trying to tar Labor with the same brush, so basically admitting that he doesn’t expect a majority govt either way.

Personally I see no problem with a fundraiser on Anzac Day when people are allowed to get on the piss at the pub, but I’m interested to hear if any service members here feel differently.

The Greens, of course, would be the partners in government with Anthony Albanese and Mr Albanese should condemn these actions,” Mr Dutton said.

Most people don’t care about Anzac day and treat it as an excuse to get wasted.

I don’t care about the greens holding a fundraiser on Anzac day, I don’t think it’s a good idea though.
A lot of the older ex-servicemen hate the greens anyway so it’s not going to lose them any votes.
One of my kids was born on Anzac day so I do the dawn service and then have a birthday party.

If it’s after 1pm then who gives a fuck

Sounds like the bowling club I play at.

luckily a found 4 old school friends there and we have formed a secret socialist cell to fight against the forces of reaction who cannot be called boomers because they are too old.

I took up bowls after having to give up golf due to a chronic shoulder injury. My GP asked me how I found the change.
I told him the game was ok but the club was full of silly old buggers.
He gave me a funny look and then said, “I like your way of thinking”.

Still not sure if he was having a go or making a complement.

I genuinely think the key to staying young is to reject the premise of getting old.

CFMEU represent less than 2% of the 1.6 million(ish) unionised workforce in Australia. If unionised childcare/agedcare workers, nurses, teachers, etc got similar media attention as the CFMEU did people might start having a positive view of unions. They never will though because much like soccer in this country the major news outlets will only ever report on the negatives because they’re protecting their own interests.

That plus the corrupt business owners on the other side of the CFMEU shit somehow always evade the media coverage & political scrutiny that the union does.

It’s truly astonishing that Dutton was considered as the most electable person in the Liberal party.

Talk about a complete own goal, I reckon any bland white guy could have beaten Albo but instead Mr potato head is their guy?

Honestly though who else was there? With Frydenberg gone? Taylor wasn’t much of a blip at the time and has proved useless since. Ley? LOL at them picking a woman. Fletcher is sane but was going to/is retiring. Birmingham is in the Senate. Sukkar? They are just devoid of options

Except Angus Taylor, who hilariously will be next.

I heard he was eliminated after seconding himself.

Hi there, My name is Colin Boyce & I’ll be your scumbag today.

We’re going to need climate nuremburg trials

Don’t think Fletcher would’ve retired if they hadn’t followed Morrison with Dutton. Think he just got sick of being a moderate with no say and no impact, then saw the writing on the wall with a massive swing to the teals. Didn’t want to be the one who lost the libs unlovable seat this time around.

Look at the moderates in the libs though - bragg and Birmingham in the senate, but no influence. Fletcher, pyne, Bishop all gone. Leeser had to step aside to be a moderate. Bridget Archer left on the sideline. If you’re not conservative you don’t have a hope, and their traditional heartland rejects them for their conservatism and shifts to the greens or teals. Now they’re left with populist rubbish that stands for nothing and aren’t really a viable alternative (I hope).

Given some of the talk I overhear when I’m out in the western suburbs here, an Albo win is far from assured. The best one I heard was that price of living was going up, people weren’t going out (despite this particular person being out among many others), therefore Albo is hopeless.

I genuinely think it’s still a 50/50 proposition.

Even if the polls are accurate, they show a very large proportion of people haven’t made up their minds.

And that the major issues on people’s minds are the same things they’ve been blaming Labor for, for much of the last 12 months if not more: cost of living, specifically housing and also electricity.

A lot of the factors that are supposedly winning the day or winning the week for Labor are very ‘Canberra’ things.

Not saying Labor shouldn’t be the more confident party, but the outcome is still on a knife edge.

Betting markets have ALP at about $1.20, which is approx 80% probability
