interesting, thanks for the Link. I had no idea of any of that.

I wanted cupsets and we got some proper cupsets in the Emperor’s Cup second round! The current J1 League leaders FC Machida Zelvia cop a 91st minute equaliser and then crash out 4-2 on penalties to the University of Tsukuba! Nagoya Grampus also suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Japan Soccer College. THAT is the magic of the cup.
A heart stopper for Harry Kewell for sure as well. Yokohama F. Marinos scored the first goal of the game against 3rd tier FC Gifu in the 81st minute. Gifu score in the 83rd and 89th. Yokohama equalise in the 96th minute and go on to win a shootout 5-4.

Harry’s Yokohama team losing again after taking the early lead. No wonder he is going gray quickly. I doubt he will last much longer. Hope he proves me wrong though
I really don’t think he was ever cut out for the job.
I wonder if they will go for Patty Kisnorbo if they do bin Harry?
Not saying that it would be a good appointment but the CFG and Australian links make sense.
Quick look at last weekend’s J2 and J3 while this current round of matches continues on this fine Sunday. I’ll post the standings for the end of this round tomorrow in my weekend wrapup.

There is one team in J3 that I have a real soft spot for, here is a little bit of information about the amazing and wonderful
Kamatamare Sanuki
Other than having a name that is just so pleasant to say, they are also fairly unique in their club identity. There are countless numbers of football teams in Japan and around the world that feature a bird or an animal in their club badge, but I can’t think of too many others that feature FOOD.
There is a style of udon noodles that is so popular in Kagawa (Kamatama Udon) prefecture that when the club professionalised and began to move towards J.League status, they adopted it into their name and featured it in their club badge.
The football in the middle of the crest is in the location that the egg would sit on top of the udon noodles.
They also play in a very appealing sky blue home kit.
The all-important mascot is a boy with a noodle bowl head, the noodles are his brain.
Their home ground is typical for a lot of Japanese clubs, featuring an athletics track.
Kamatamare Sanuki have the license that allows for their promotion to J1 League, but with the club currently sitting in 19th in J3 League, it might be a while yet until we see Sanupi and his noodle brain in the top flight of Japanese football.
Last week across the J.Leagues (the week often gets busier than I expect and I don’t have time or energy to pay attention to the results, but I always like to get them done eventually)
A great day out last week for FC Machida Zelvia at the expense of Harry Kewell and Yokohama F. Marinos, the front-running new boys of J1 coming away with the 3-1 win.
They had a better time of it (unfortunately for me) in the midweek catchup game against Sanfrecce Hiroshima, a 90th minute goal this time coming to their aid rather than detriment as they won 3-2.

J1 League Round 18 standings:
Vegalta Sendai fans must have surely thought they had seen a great home win when Sendai scored to take a 2-1 lead in the 93rd minute. V-Varen Nagasaki had the last laugh, stealing a point with an equaliser in the 96th.

J3 League Round 17 standings:
Something interesting I read that J.League is doing this season is playing a number of games at Tokyo National Stadium, as special ‘Kokuritsu Day’ matches.
So far the games have been pretty successful at bringing in crowds to the stadium that was rebuilt for Tokyo Olympics. Games featuring one Tokyo (or nearby) team, a special day out at the National Stadium, it seems to be a hit.
Tokyo Verdy vs Yokohama F. Marinos had 53,026
FC Tokyo vs Urawa Reds had 49,005
FC Tokyo vs Kashima Antlers had 52, 772
FC Machida Zelvia vs Vissel Kobe had 39,080
Kashima Antlers vs Yokohama F. Marinos had 52,860
Vissel Kobe vs Kawasaki Frontale had 49,541
Sounds like a real festival of football
Things keep getting worse for Harry Kewell, as mentioned earlier. I don’t know much about Yokohama F. Marinos, as I do not care for the club at all, but surely there must be some buyers remorse going on here. They are on a real losing roll and just lost to Sagan Tosu midweek in a catchup game.
On the other side, the Machida miracle seems to be continuing. Mitch Duke banged in another goal, opening the scoring for his team in the 3-1 win over Gamba Osaka. Is it still too early for the fans to start dreaming the impossible dream?

J3 League Round 19 standings:
So Yokohama F. Marinos lost 4-0 to Gamba Osaka yesterday.
They’re now in 13th place, a healthy 20 points off top spot. There must be some rumblings about Kewell’s future getting louder every week now.
Other than more pain for Harry Kewell, there was a lot of good football across the divisions in J.League over the weekend.
Another week, another win for FC Machida Zelvia. Mitch Duke started and played 75 minutes in a 1-0 win over Mitch Langerak and Nagoya Grampus.
Ultimate Scenus Amazium at Urawa Komabu Stadium (I’m not sure why they were playing at their traditional home ground rather than the Saitama 2002 Stadium) but not a night to remember for the Reds fans. Shonan Bellmare, scrapping for survival, scored an equalising goal (2-2) in the 90th minute and then grabbed a shocking winner in the 92nd.
Other scenes at Kashiwa Reysol as they bagged a 3-2 winner in the 94th against FC Tokyo. Even scenier scenes in Fukuoka as Kyoto Sanga scored the winner in the 99th minute against the home team Avispa!
Sadly for me, the early season unbeaten run for Sanfrecce Hiroshima seems to have faded into the mists of time, they lost 3-1 to Vissel Kobe to continue a drift away from contendership.
J1 League Round 22 results:
Sanfrecce Hiroshima 1-3 Vissel Kobe (25,119)
Kashima Antlers 2-0 Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo (16,461)

Kashiwa Reysol 3-2 FC Tokyo (11,804)
Avispa Fukuoka 1-2 Kyoto Sanga (8,821)
J1 League Round 22 standings:
Somehow, I have absolutely no idea how, miserable Thespa Gunma who had barely managed to look like getting a win all season came away with a 4-0 victory away to Ehime FC.
J2 League Round 23 results:
Iwaki FC 0-1 Oita Trinita (3,807)

J3 League Round 20 standings:
Mitch Duke seems to be killing it, from 2nd division to leading the J League. Hope they can hang on
A small footballing tragedy (in my opinion) happened early this year that I only just noticed.
The team with the most charming name and logo in all of football, the JFL team Suzuka Point Getters, have been rebranded as Atletico Suzuka Club.
Farewell to the wonderful little F1 inspired name and logo.
Welcome to the new branding.
The logos definitely decent but will miss the point getters
The 3rd round of the Emperor’s Cup was midweek. We went really close to some classic cupsets, but not quite all the way sadly. University of Tsukuba took J1 side Kashiwa Reysol to extra time, and the lowly placed Mito Hollyhock in J2 made Yokohama F. Marinos go all the way to penalties to get their win. Albirex Niigata completely fell apart going down 6-1 to J2 frontrunners V-Varen Nagasaki.

Harry Kewell sacked.
Prediction missed by a fortnight.
