NSW Premier League 19/20/21/22/23/24/25

My favourite bit was all of this comes after their own captain asked them to behave themselves. They cannot help themselves. Not a single one of those perpetrators support club more than they support their own ego.

Your “questions” are hilarious… They’re not giving any blow in access to their social media account, it would be someone from the top. If your leadership is posting crap like that and you’re still part of it, you’re just as involved. It’s not the hard to walk away from a supporters group…

The irony in that statement is that Slater is one of SU’s favourite “sons” condemning what has occurred and he’s being called out. Slater and Rugari are also football/sport journalists so they don’t need to publicly make statements about anything outside of their realm.

The statement reads like they are the victim, but it is all self inflicted.

Making a joke about religion isn’t quite in the same realm (it’s not even in the same fucking universe TBH) of chanting and yelling homophobic and racial slurs.

Chuck their entire club in the bin.

Isn’t it? Discrimination is discrimination. I mean it’s the equivalent of saying it’s fine for a black person to be openly racist against a white person. We’re trying to make a society where no one discriminates, saying it’s ok to make jokes due to one person’s preferences but it’s not ok due to another’s is exactly the opposite… It’s also worth mentioning that the viewership of national tv is significantly larger than an SU match…

Some comments from the clubs recent posts. I thought about blurring the names, but name and shame the bigots I say. (Although if it goes against forum rules, please let me know…)

Reuben Kaye is a comedian.

Homophobic slurs =/= jokes about religion.

Comedy is now cancelled?

Charlie Hebdo. I guess some people didn’t think jokes about religion were funny.

Had no clue who Reuben Kaye even was, let alone that they are a comedian… I mean that comes down to context and what was being discussed etc. Would there be the same reaction if a conservative comedian was making homophobic jokes? Don’t get me wrong, i’m not trying to defend religion per sei, just pointing out that equality is equality and it’s not ok to attack either side for their views. The fact that it’s generally people hiding behind religion definitely needs to be taken into account, but it doesn’t justify discriminating against people for their religious views.

At the same time, we literally had a thread on these forums where nothing was sacred which was cancelled purely due to the risk on how these forums could be seen from an external source.

Always good to provide an opinion on something without having done any research.

“what if” isn’t an argument. I agree there should be equality, but when one side are being disgusting human beings (shall we tally up all the gay bashings, shootings and other despicable acts that have happened) and the other is simply poking fun at them in response I don’t think we need to question the side that are cracking jokes.

Technically Reuben Kaye didn’t make a joke about, poke fun at or slur the people who believe in a certain religion. He made a joke about the central figure of the religion. He didn’t say anything negative or discriminatory about people who follow that religion. He made a joke about a figure and one particular story that comes from the religion.

If what he did should not be allowed, should you also not be allowed to make jokes about political figures and their parties (not the people who follow those parties)? What about actors and singers and their movies and bands (not the fans of those people and the art)? And they’re actual real, tangible things, not just belief systems. Where’s the line here?

People don’t have to like the joke or the joke teller if they follow a thing that’s been joked about. But it’s not a slur at them with malicious or harmful intent.

For what it’s worth, the day after that clown Reuben Kaye made an inappropriate joke, Waleed apologised on behalf of the Project, indicating strongly their disapproval and that sometimes they can’t control what someone says in a live TV interview.

Which is exactly what you’d expect should happen.

I mean it’s worth mentioning that it’s fairly obvious that the joke was made to rile up Christians. I mean nit-picking like that is exactly the same thing that conservatives do… How many times did Trump supporters come out with the whole, “well he said XXX but what he REALLY meant…”

Isn’t it the whole issue that one person’s joke is another person’s offense? I mean someone literally made a joke in the jokes thread about homosexuality and someone called it out saying “Kind of thought we were beyond gay jokes at this point.” It’s worth mentioning that @scooter you yourself liked the second comment…

In any case, happy to pass it over, but just pointing out that conservatives hide behind the “it’s just a joke” to discriminate against homosexuals on a fairly common basis…

My comment above was in regards to the fans of the football club directly yelling intended abuse at an individual versus a joke told with the intention of being funny to a varied audience of many.

I was brought up catholic and while I wouldn’t class myself as being a practicing member anymore, I can still see the funniness of the joke. You have to be able to laugh at yourself and your life no matter what race, creed, religion or sexual orientation you are. You can’t be offended at everything that’s said that runs in opposition to what you are, think or believe. You don’t have to like the joke or the joke teller, however the offence should come when it’s not a joke intended for humour, but abuse intended to hurt.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say most of them don’t even hide behind “it’s just a joke”. They just opening discriminate.

And that’s the issue with these militant religious types. They can’t take a joke with their head stuck so far up a make believe person’s ass.

If we start thinking that jokes about someone’s beliefs are the same as racial or homophobic slurs we have become a very intolerant society.

eg I believe 5g towers spread Covid.

Don’t you dare make a joke about it.

Yea… i was leading with a suggestion, in those ‘questions’.

In a tv court room, their defense would have called me out.

I’ve never heard of the fella and I’m not familiar with his TV show but I just read his joke and it’s pretty good. It doesn’t belong in the dad joke thread but it’s funny. It’s a good play on words on a couple of different levels.

When did people stop teaching their kids that sticks and stones will break my bones?

I think the actual issue with all of it is that it was explicit content being aired nationally during prime time on a show that isn’t known for its comedic value. Otherwise this sort of stuff happens all the time, particularly with social media.

There’s a time and place to take the piss and have a laugh, and that clearly wasn’t it. Plenty of other opportunities for comedians to do their thing in a more suitable context.
