Round 13 - Wellington vs Sydney FC - 15/1/25

I gave him the 3 points

I hope that one day there is a proper broadcast of football from over there and we don’t have to settle for the WellingtonPhoenixTV feed.

Considering the run of games, a draw and clean sheet is acceptable.

We just need to ensure we beat Brisbane on the weekend.

Thought Holman, Sega and Grant were excellent, Caceras and King were good.

Sena needs to cut the shit out of his game

Eh, I thought it was a slightly disappointing result. The Nix were pretty ordinary, right there for the taking imo, we should have buried at least one of those chances. But ah well, Wellington hasn’t really been a happy hunting ground for us in recent years, so we take it and move on.

Very disappointed in Sena’s blatant dive in the penalty box. He needs to get that out of his game ASAP, it’s not something I ever want to see from someone in a Sydney FC shirt. I was embarrassed for the club to see it. Never mind that it’s a clear attempt to cheat, how does he expect to get away with it when VAR is a thing now?

3 pts off top?

A bit of an asterisk on that as the teams above us have 1-2 games in hand on us, but considering where we were a few weeks ago, i’ll take it.

I’ll take an asterisk

A win on the weekend and we will have well exceeded my expectations for this harsh run of games, we’ll be undefeated in 7 and probably sitting clear third or fourth (possibly higher but may have played more games than a few others).

It has been a good turnaround up to now from where we were just two weeks ago, win on the weekend would solidify that and then with a bit of a break we can go into the Victory game confident of getting something too.

3 min highlights.
Shows 7 shots to 2 which looks like a fair cut.

Hear from Sydney FC boss Ufuk Talay following their match against Wellington.

Yeah, this is the thing I don’t understand with stupid dives like this, even if you fool the referee, the VAR would get the ref over to take a look on the screen where it would be obvious it wasn’t a penalty.

Plus it came like a minute after he did a ridiculous one right in front of the ref, that one with a full pike and one and a half twist.
He should have figured out by now that he’s not in Kansas anymore and the ALM refs don’t give those ones for light touches. There’s been a couple of times where he does this and the area he does it in ends up with us getting countered. He’s good enough to not need this.

Confirmed Anas injury is only one week, we might see him on Saturday. Hope that means a little rotation, Lolley is well due for a rest.

I think he basically pre-empted a touch from the defender which never came (and therefore it looked like a blatant dive). If he got so much as slightly clipped by a defender it probably would have been a penalty, which is why I hate diving like that because it’s just very against the spirit of the game.

Yeah for sure that was Sena expecting contact from behind and positioning himself to draw the foul, as much as a simulation. Big difference for me- after he goes down he is still reaching out to kick the ball rather than rolling around to exaggerate the contact.

And to be fair, most a league defenders would just clatter in like that.

Its the same move he does all over the park but I dont think he judges the risk/reward well. He’s given up possesion in our territory many times doing the same thing, even as he earns plenty of fouls for clumsy challenges from behind. I liked earlier in the season where there was talk about Anas adjusting to the physicality of the league then learning to ride tackles - would love Sena to do the same but I dont think its his game

He’s expecting contact, felt a touch on the back, then someone else makes an attempt at a tackle, then he went down.

So in slow motion it looks like a dive, because it looks like he’s reacting to the attempted tackle.

Not a dive, imo. But not a pen.

Yep, and I suspect if it wasn’t for that one immediately prior, the ref may not have issued the yellow card.

Butthurt not too severe.

Well it has been a month since we copped a baguetting.

At the airport waiting to fly home.

Should’ve listened to @Sydney_Rovers .
Absolutely rubbish trip and his selflessness in continually coming back and ensuring it is still shit so no one else has to come is admirable.

My advice, don’t come.

5 Stars.
