Round 26 - Sydney FC vs Auckland - 12/4/25

Tried out best to lose it in the final 5 or so… a lucky draw in the end.

I don’t recall Talay finishing Corica?

Yeah so I eventually got P+ rewind working during half time, and he starts from higher than i thought.

What I caught from the replay in the stadium was his distinct acceleration back as he recognised the threat, and the attacker clearly being a full stride or two quicker in recognising the opportunity and attacking the ball.

Had JCP been running as fast as those panicked last few steps the whole time - instead of slowing to a jog at the edge of the box when the ball broke to our right - he’s comfortably goal side.

And I would expect a defender to see the open man inside the goal box right in front of him, while the opposition has possession in the final thied, and show some urgency in getting goal side ASAP.

What a dire state of affairs.

I had a look at the table and the fact that five other teams have actually conceded more goals than our awful defense astounds me.

Is that surprising? I don’t even know which hypothetical domestic signing would meaningfully strengthen our back line. Our domestic defensive stocks aren’t what they once were.

I think Corica wanted to make a statement here in any case, & today is quite telling. Who wouldnt miss Sydney fc.

Ignoring who’s off contract any of these players immediately improve our starting XI - of Australians playing in the A-League.

Centre Backs
Trewin

Right backs
Pierias

Left backs

Redmayne needs to be starting. Sure he wasn’t in his best form before he got replaced but even at his worst he was better than 7 beers

I was clamouring for Redmayne back after Melbourne away on Australia Day. 13 games of utter calamity since, HDM is not up to it.

There HAS to be something else going on in the background, because no sane coach would persist with HDM.

Some fun stats from OptaJason recently would beg to differ

Today it was just an assist, the game-high passes, the game-high duels won, the game-high tackles won. Just rubbish all round.

IMO a fully locked-in Sena that’s focused on the game, and not taken out of it by referees who let opponents manhandle him and get under his skin, is probably a top-few of all-time A-League player. It’s a shame we only get it 70-80% of the time.

Yeah. Definitely worked wonders against Heart.

HDM is the dumbest footballer i have ever seen. And we’ve seen some goddamn plonkers over the years.

WTF has Redders done to remain benched this season. HDM has more brain explosions in a single game than i remember Redders having in a season.

Seriously the shit HDM did today is coached out of most kids by the time they’re 12.

HDM is “better” at playing out and sweeper keeper… but not enough to offset the basic faults - catching the ball, marking the near post, swatting the ball out of play rather than straight back to an attacker. Rather than changing the plan to suit the players we have, Uffy is very stubborn.

Same situation with our backs. JCP has a massive engine, so Uffy plays him at left back or left wing, but his defensive positioning and judgement lets him down at key moments. When we’re down central defenders, surely we are better off with him at left centre back, and King at left back, but Uffy must be basing it on stats, etc that none of us can see, but which make no sense.

We keep playing the ball out from the back when we haven’t got the basic skills to do it, and further complicated by us being dead on our feet from no subs, and field being crapped on by rugby…. Means we are under siege for long periods of time, and players keep making progressively worse decisions.

Everyone can see how frustrated Joe Lolley is… he was run into the ground earlier in the season and has never recovered. Why wouldn’t we give him a breather after 70, when he has been pretty ineffective the last few matches?

Corica making subs at 60 minutes was just trolling us too… and Uffy still held out on the subs

Sena undoubtably offers a lot going forward and is imo the best in the league at transitioning out of deep midfield.

He is undoubtably the most fouled in the league partly as a result of this and the way he dopes people with a clever drop of shoulder or read of when they dive in.
But he is a lazy fuck, gives in easily when he thinks he will be fouled regardless of contact and occassionally switches off entirely to ball watch. Both of which have directly cost us goals.

His distribution is fantastic, but when he switches off a couple of times per game he hits a soft pass straight to an opponent under no pressure.

If he was 100% consistent, he would be one of the best in the league, but the frustration is that the drawbacks arent related to form, they are intrinsic to his temprament and work ethic and thats what pisses everyone off.

Talay’s post-match presser

I have a theory actually, maybe if Redders plays x amount of games, he gets an extension?

Hence freezing him out to avoid keeping him next year?

The guy who scored an own goal and helped ship 6 goals last night? Whilst also locking down 7 yellow cards this season?
