Streets of our town - the Sydney thread

Nice little Doco about AC/DC and all the sites of Sydney where they started out

It’s been gone more than 15 years and the building sits there still, crumbling and uninspiring, so redevelopment of the block will be a good thing in the long run, but here is a good read about the former Grotta Capri restaurant in Kensington.

I don’t know if this is some sort of urban myth but there used to be a ex drummer with ACDC with the surname Currenti who ran a pizzeria out at Lugarno.

Yep all true apparently

I’ve been to the pizza shop to check it out. There is AC/DC memorabilia on the walls. Pizza was ok, more Aussie than Napolitani.

Tony is a lovely bloke, still has a bash in the tubs every now and then too.

RIP If you needed a train yesterday evening or thus morning.

Assume the Union has a contract to negotiate soon…

I get the Metro and it was crazy last night as well. I had to wait ages at Martin Place while jam packed metros went past. I was tempted to walk back to Wynyard and get a train. Lucky I didn’t in hindsight

Absolute disasterclass in communication and messaging. Having media report ā€œtrains expected to be up and running by 6:30amā€ as people are making their decision to walk out the door only to turn up to no trains and packed stations.

Feeling sorry for those who don’t have the option to WFH.

We had aircon people coming in the morning to install aircon, plus power went out at our place on top of that. By the time I was ready to leave the house, it took me an hour on what’s usually a 20min drive. That’s also with going through side streets in Rydalmere

Was wondering why it was soo fucked at 5pm, then got home and saw the news.

Everyone fucking crowds the door area too (while refusing to not look at their phones) rather than moving further into the carriages. It could become a great case study into human fucking stupidity.

they should already do that for boarding planes

Recommendations for things to do with a 4 year old in our fine city?

Context- I’ve lived in UK since 2015 and have come home to visit a lot pre-covid. However for the first time we’ll be coming back with our 4 year old daughter.

I have a 4 day period where my partner will be working in her Sydney office, so we’ll have dad-daughter time aplenty (I will be dropping her off at her nan’s place in Windsor for a day for me-time).

Growing up in Sydney, I know the city well, but don’t have much of an idea for things to do with a 4 year in and around the city. We’ll be staying in Millers Point for reference.

What would be your go-to activity for those with little ones?

Definitely recommend Sea Life Sydney Aquarium. Then there’s a superb ice cream place outside the IMAX Darling Harbour.

I’m not a parent, but the Zoo would be a good place for a kid to see some fun animals, plus the ferry ride would be an added plus.

Plenty of breweries around Marrickville. She’ll love them!

Yeah that’s on the agenda, although probably when her mum isn’t work.

Australia zoo is quite nice, you get to see the animals a bit better than Toronga, although you do get the ferry etc in Tarronga

Obviously the tourist traps are still worth a visit e.g. Sealife Aquarium (Darling Harbour) and Taronga Zoo. The maratime museum was probably my favourite museum as a kid, especially since you can climb all over the HMAS Vampire and the submarine. (Is Vampire the warship or the submarine, I always forget)

Do a ferry trip (if the weather is fine) out to Manly. My kids love that one.

If you have access to a car (you can PT, but if youre staying in Milsons Pt, you’ll be looking at like 2-3 trains and buses each - and half a day that comes with it, especially when our train network spectacularly grinds to a halt over a minor issue) look at going to the Western Sydney Zoo at Eastern Creek. It’s smaller than Taronga, but it’s split into two sections - local Aussie wildlife and African wildlife. With WSZ, I highly recommend the section where you can get up close and personal with Koalas and Kangaroos/Wallabies. They literally just hop around you.

There’s also a Meercat enclosure (and OMFG are they cute AF). There’s also a crocodile (big fuckin’ salty) that comes close to the glass when it can be bothered, and a reptile enclosure with plenty of snakes and whathave you. There’s also a small (although the pool is quite large) aquarium that has sharks in it too.

So yeah, WSZ is like a mini Sealife/Taronga in one. Easy to lose 3-4 hours round there.

Again, if you have access to a car, Calmsley Hill City Farm is great with kids. There’s an awesome petting zoo with baby goats and sheep, and you can even feed a camel. There’s an open picnic area where you can have wallabies hop right past you. On weekends there’s some feeding shows, and whipping lessons where they let you play around with a whip, and cattle dog demonstrations . Its a working farm too, so there’s sheep and cattle and pigs. It’s in Abbotsbury/Fairfield, so I’d recommend a car.
