I think Speed (either him or Harper) got his facts wrong. According to SBS, the Chinese FA are looking to put a cap at around $123m per club. Pretty sure the figure that Speed referred to was the maximum foreign player cap at $3m Euro per foreign player (SBS have quoted $4.85 which would be in AUD). That’s a lot more sensible, and will still allow the CSL clubs to be very competitive in the ACL. It’s still good news for us though as we might have more of a chance at enticing players in that price bracket to come to Australia with the good ol’ classic “lifestyle” argument.
Kawasaki Frontale continue their Sydney FC style domination of J.League, winning the league handily again.
Champions now in 2017, 2018 and 2020, although they had that blip year last year they were still Levain Cup winners in 2019.
Yokohama F. Marinos well off the pace, were never in the hunt for a second J.League this season. They’re currently in 9th with one game left to play. There’s a reasonable chance they could finish outside the top 10.
No relegation in J.League this season means that it will be a 20 team league next year, Tokushima Vortis and Avispa Fukuoka are in the top 2 position.
Blaublitz Akita have finally earned promotion from J3, winning the league easily with a ton of games to go.
I think it’s also clear that Nieuwenhof broke Hulk, and Sydney in turn broke SIPG, they got done 2-0 by Iniesta and Vissel Kobe so both teams out of our group are gone already.
Ulsan have carried on since slicing up MV. They’ve beaten Beijing Guoan 2-0 and now Iniesta’s Vissel Kobe 2-1 in extra time to make the final against Persepolis on Saturday.
Kawasaki Frontale win the (much shortened) 2020 Emperor’s Cup, their first ever appearance in an Emperor’s Cup final, beating 5 time winners Gamba Osaka 1-0.
The drastically reorganised and abbreviated format is not the celebration of the tournament that everyone would have hoped for the 100th edition, but it can’t be helped, well done to the powerhouse of this era of Japanese football, Frontale.
J.League winners 2017, 2018, 2020. Levain Cup winners 2019. Emperor’s Cup winners 2020.
Could this be the beginning of the end of the CSL? Champions Jiangsu FC have ceased operations and Tianjin Teda are expected to follow suit in the coming days.
