It is nonetheless an outstanding achievement to get so far up the table with just an U23 team. I always felt that not having even one or two experienced heads would be a severe handicap for the team, but the team is competing and players are showing they can cut it regardless. I really feel we would wipe the floor of any of the A-League clubs’ respective NPL teams. NSW probably has the toughest NPL top division in Australia.
Fair play to the Mariners too, after 10 or 11 games they were only a few points / places above the 2 substandard Sydney sides, they must’ve been on a bit of a roll to climb up to 7th.
They won something like 4 in a row at one stage, including against us I think.
The Wanderers can’t poach all our players if we send 'em overseas.
Modern day problems require modern day soloutions.
We’re loaning a youth player that we currently don’t quite consider ready to push for A-League minutes on our bench to a club in a top-division European league? Those Eurosnobs have some explaining to do.
Yes. Veikkausliiga is the top division. You cannot be prompted to any higher division.
Ah, I see what you meant.
Watching the boys on npl.tv via my ChromeCast today when a power outage hit (at my home). We were 2-0 down at the time.
Power still out, but just checked the score and it seems we’re getting spanked 6-2 by Super Dave’s lads.
Probably good that my power went out, after all.
To be fair, 11 adults vs our six remaining U20 kids doesn’t sound fair at all.
We’re still in the top 6 and ahead of Wollongong on points.
Wests lost 2-0 to Sutherland, and Macarthur/Northbridge lost 3-1 to Olympic, and they’re still second last and last respectively. Macarthur/Northbridge via Fairfield is set for automatic relegation, whilst Wests are set for the relegation play offs. Although mind you, they’re only 2 points behind Mt. Druitt. …
Amazing scenes! 1-0 injury time winner from Glasson, played a 1-2 with Fryer and drilled it home from a tight angle just inside the box, to beat NWS Spirit at Valentine.
Only caught the 2nd half and we pretty much stole it. We didn’t create much while Spirit forced a couple of good saves from Pava and also missed the target from a few other glorious chances.
Scarcella, Glasson, Pavlesic and De Jesus all started out of the contracted players. Matthews and Fryer need to get on scholarship deals stat if they’re not already.
Lost to Wanderers today 2-1, making it more likely that they’ll stay up for next season…
Shame.
Keeping an eye on the small plethora of young’uns that Baumjohann has sent overseas. Alen Harbas made his professional debut last week for Kotkan Työväen Palloilijat (KTP) as a 70th minute substitute. They lost 2-0. He apparently had a shot on goal. Hopefully we see a few more appearances from him towards the backend of the Finnish season.
Ahead of the Australia Cup tie, our kids have just all but handed APIA the NPL title by holding Rockdale to a 2-2 draw tonight. APIA have a 3 point lead but vastly superior goal difference, Rockdale now with just the one game left next weekend are not going to catch them.
Only saw the last half hour but we held our own, strongish side featuring JK!, Scarcella, Glasson and De Jesus. We opened the scoring through Fucken Who Else? Fantastic team move, played out from the back, through midfield to Gibson who drove at them and slipped the perfect ball into JK’s path. JK just went bang… you’ll watch it and think it’s a piece of piss, but in this mood the kid is simply unerring.
Their equaliser came from a shanked Pava clearance, scrappy one to give up. Rockdale took the lead and fair play, that was a good goal too, absolute quality cushioned header assist and deadly finish. Urosevski always scores against us. We levelled it up with yet another injury time goal, long ball over the top to JK, he cut inside beautifully and put it on a plate for Callaghan to tap in (ignore the commentator, it’s 100% a JK assist, not a JK goal).
Rockdale with an ex-SFC youth vibe too. They had Urosevski and Bai Antoniou starting, plus Iain Ramsey (!) and Brae Ovens who was in last years 20’s for us on their bench.
I’d heard he had returned home from backpacking around South East Asia. I don’t think he’s scored a gig for the Philippines in a while though.
