2020 Olympics Japan

They sure made it stressful viewing right at the end!

Brazil casually 3-0 up over Germany after 30 minutes. Richarlison with a hat trick

WEEEVENGE!!

That second German goal was great.

I’m so hyped and keen for the Opening Ceremony and the games, it’s like Christmas eve when I was a kid, I just love this stuff.

Do channel 7 really think they can get away with pausing the Ceremony during the ads, then restarting it? They are about 5 minutes behind now.

Have to feel for the Japanese organisers. They go to so much effort and expense only to have no spectators. The ceremony is a bit better now the athletes are rocking up but it was a bit sad early on performing to an empty stadium

That was impressive

Disappointing lack of Kazu / Endo lighting the flame.

I wonder how many million Americans are confused why (perceived American) Naomi Osaka was lighting the cauldron?

American exceptionalism?

Groaned when the Americans came out during the ceremony and started chanting USA USA.

They really are the worst.

I’m beginning to think Australians just can’t commentate and have been reduced to matey familiarity and obscure, useless details.

That globe they did with all of the drones was incredible

Pretty cool stuff for me.

When I was in Japan I cycled from Yokosuka to Mt Fuji.

The men’s road race today will go up some of the roads that I rode on, some of the climbs were amazing.

Well, with lockdown, I think this will be the most Olympics and Paralympics I’ll watch since 2000. Watched half of the men’s field hockey against Japan.

Was pleased to see Naomi Osaka light the cauldron.
Was reflecting on the fact that one of the earliest events in sport I remember is Ali lighting the cauldron in Atlanta. 4 years later it was Freeman in our own city. 1992, which I don’t remember but was around for, still the most incredible cauldron lighting I think. There’s probably some Australian kid somewhere who will be the person to light the cauldron in Brisbane.

I reckon it’ll be Ash Barty, especially if she wins a gold medal. She ticks too many boxes.

  1. Local
  2. Champion
  3. Aboriginal
  4. People actually like her

Oooh, that’s a good guess.
Yeah, she keeps going the way she’s going she’ll have won many more Grand Slams and other medals by 2032. I guess it depends who else comes on the scene in the next 11 years, but yes, great guess!

3 on 3 basketball really eliminates the boring mid-court contest… that doesn’t exist in regular basketball anyways.

I would lean towards someone who is/was involved in a more ā€œOlympicā€ sport, rather than one that treats the Olympics as an optional extra.
