I was curious about this so I calculated the share of votes allocated to debutants divided by the share of minutes played by debutants. The idea being that if that ratio was greater than 1, then debutants are getting a higher share of votes than non-debutants, relative to the minutes they played.
For example, on Kamsoba’s starting debut last season (vs WSW) he played 84 minutes (8.9% of the total minutes played by starters) and was second in MOTM after picking up 79 votes (23% of the total votes allocated to starters), giving a ratio of 2.59 (23 / 8.9).
Since we started MOTM voting, there have been 64 matches in which at least one player has made their starting debut. The votes-vs-minutes ratio was > 1 in only 29 of those matches, so just over half the time, debutants actually got fewer votes than non-debutants, relative to minutes played.
There is a fair skew though: across those 64 matches, the average ratio was 1.47, and some of the highest-rated performances have been debuts. Yairo Yau’s starting debut in the 2-7 loss to CCM is still the second-largest MOTM win we’ve ever had, as he picked up an average of 4.43 / 6 votes at a votes-vs-minutes ratio of 7.47 (76% of the votes, 10% of the minutes). Reza had a ratio of 6.60 on his debut in Brisbane, getting 51% of the votes in just 7.8% of the minutes. Segecic and Caballo sit 15th on the highest-ratio list, with 2.17 (40% of the votes, 18% of the minutes, combined). There have been three matches where our starting debutants got no votes: Joel Chianese, Daniel Petkovski and George Blackwood.
Result for the Cup Round of 16 win over Bentleigh (apologies for the slowness):
We had the exact same number of voters as the first match of the season (44), and 92% of their votes (243 / 264) went to just 5 different players! There was just one vote separating third from fourth, but the MOTM was way out in front — Adrian Segecic picking up his second of the season to go with his maiden goal.
Thanks to all voters; next match is obviously the quarter final against Oakleigh this coming Wednesday.
Sorry dude, Chile is working on rebuilding the front -end, there were tech issues that made it impossible to simply restore the old one, and work is interfering with the efforts.
Well, all results from last year should be null and void.
I tried to vote for the Ballboys for some matches last year, but sadly were not an option. Nor was “the intoxicated English bloke yelling profanities from the hill”
