2024-25 SFCU Player of the Season: RESULTS

And the results are in for the 2024–25 SFCU Player of the Season!

As always, huge thanks to Grant, Alex & James for making this possible and everyone who voted throughout the year for making this happen! The full list of voters is here, so if you don’t like the results, that is who to blame. Or vote more often yourself.

But without further ado…

Douglas Costa is your 2024–25 SFCU Player of the Season

With 5 MOTMs, 5 second-places and 5 thirds (one shared), he totalled 29.5 points to finish on top.

Less than a point behind was Anthony Cáceres (4 MOTMs, 6 seconds, 6 thirds; 28.8 points), repeating his runner-up performance from last season. And it was a smaller gap then back to Adrian Segecic (8 MOTMs, 0 seconds, 5 thirds; 28.5 points), such that just a single point covered the top three.

Anas Ouahim (6 MOTMs, 2 seconds, 3 thirds; 23.8 points) and Patryk Klimala (2 MOTMs, 7 seconds, 2 thirds; 22.0 points) closed out the top five, while the other visa player Léo Sena (2 MOTMs, 2 seconds, 3 thirds; 11.8 points) came in eighth, despite holding second place as late as 15 games into the season.

All winners:

Thanks for playing!

Amazing effort thanks for always running this. Genuinely surprised by the result I’d predicted this:

And really only saw Seg or Caceres winning it- so much so that I thought Ouahim’s early season good form would have carried him to a top 3 spot.

Wow Ouahim really started the season with a bang and dropped off huh? Hard to argue with the top five really.

Thanks for doing this as always. I like that it makes me think about the performances a bit more each game.

Geez and we have lost 4 out of our top 5 players

Was just about to post exactly this… so depressing (especially with Lolley seemingly unhappy and Costa still on the beach in Brazil)

The drop off timed perfectly with Costa’s return to the starting lineup after his hamstring issue in week 7, away to CCM. Banged on about it mid-game and again since, it was clear the way we set up that Ouahim would be the one most shafted (Lolley too), and it was emphasised when Ouahim was the one pulled after HDM’s red card. The returning Costa lasted a whole 10 minutes longer before needing to be subbed off anyways.

So much about what went wrong with last season was so obvious for so long. Le sigh.

After the way he startewd, I remember thinking “we’re watching the early stages of a Sydney FC great”

Yeah missed the mark there a bit

Looking through the list of voters ( thank you all for voting ) I would like to note that someone who vociferously rants both in and out of game threads did not vote once.

Yeah.

I truly meant to. It’s just that once you fall off the wagon it’s hard to get back on.

Seeing as this thread has been bumped a couple of times, here’s a fun stat I had forgotten to post the first time…

In 2024-25, Jaushua Sotirio and Mathias Macallister were the only two players to make an appearance but not pick up a single vote. They are the 16th and 17th players to suffer this fate since voting started in 2011-12.

Macallister probably won’t feel too bad about it, since he only came off the bench once for a total of six minutes (and, I imagine, has already broken his duck this season (…VOTE NOW if you haven’t already…)). But Sotirio’s 49 minutes puts him behind just one player in terms of minutes played for zero votes…

Here is the full list, minus that top player. I will be pretty impressed if someone knows who it is (without looking up stats, obviously)

Minutes (Appearances) – Season, Player
50 (1) – 2012-13, ???
49 (2) – 2024-25, Jaushua Sotirio
30 (2) – 2022-23, Oscar Priestman
21 (5) – 2011-12, Nathan Sherlock
17 (1) – 2018-19, Marco Tilio
11 (1) – 2016-17, Nikola Kuleski
11 (1) – 2017-18, Nikola Kuleski
9 (1) – 2019-20, Ryan Teague
9 (1) – 2020-21, Michael Zullo
8 (1) – 2019-20, Patrick Wood
7 (1) – 2018-19, Jerry Skotadis
6 (1) – 2024-25, Mathias Macallister
5 (1) – 2021-22, Corey Hollman
4 (1) – 2018-19, Alex Cisak
4 (1) – 2020-21, Callum Talbot
2 (1) – 2014-15, Max Burgess
1 (1) – 2020-21, Patrick Flottmann

That American guy?

Hagi Gligor?

Did Kruno play that year?

Enfield? A few seasons too early

Not a bad guess, he played 115 minutes across 4 matches that season. His debut was the 2-7 loss to CCM and he got 6 votes, possibly just for not playing the first 70 minutes.

Another good guess, though he started the first 5 matches and scraped together 10 votes across them.

Player I was looking for played in the ADP home debut loss vs Newcastle and left the club mid-season, possibly because he didn’t want his jaw broken by someone with much longer reach…

Dimi Petratos?

I recall Kalac threatened him in a training game.

Yep

I don’t remember too well but he must’ve been on the outer already because the Jets game was his only start & he got dragged after 50 mins, he didn’t even make the bench otherwise and the Kalac incident didn’t happen until a couple of weeks later
