Well, Harry needed to be told what the goal was!

He goes down as one of the most disappointing signings in the A league. That’s not to suggest that he was a bad signing just that, on paper, it looked to be quite a good signing and it was a surprise it didn’t work out.
You had a player that completed pre-season and played a couple of games at a Premier League club. He always came across as humble, hard working and, apart from a knee injury in 2008, had a good record with injuries.
That it didn’t work out was both surprising and disappointing.
Chipperfield has all but torn up his Australian nationality and become Swiss.
Schwarzer would rather his son, who is not as tall as himself would rather his son play in, and potentially for the Philippines over Australia.
That sort of mentality has put a lot of people off the Golden Generation. They’ve almost got this boomer-esque complextion that they’re the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Not only that, I think some of them had the NSL bitters mentalitity and we’re upset that the Ethnic clubs were shut off from the mainstream.
Not only that, they just didn’t think the A-League was a serious competition. Most of them got found out as washed up before they played in the league, and had serious denial about the fact they were going to show up, be hailed as Kings and walk the league.
My understanding was that his son is too short to play keeper in Europe so he’s focusing his career on the Philippines where his mum is from as he’s got a better chance there. in Europe (or here) clubs won’t take a keeper under 6 feet tall. Matt Ryan gets a lot of noise around his height in the UK and he’s 6’1”
Chipperfield ended up back in Illawarra league football, then coached the Stingrays. Skipped straight past A-Liga.
Culina was excellent for GCU. It’s such a shame they had a absoloute cunt of a human owning the club. I think GCU would still be in the league if it weren’t for Palmer.
I’m willing to give Kewell benefit of the doubt and say Kewell tried. He tried hard, but he was becoming past it by the time he signed. The quality of the league surprised him somewhat as well.
Yes, and to his credit, he admitted that he was surprised by the quality and that he was finding it challenging.
I think that’s also code for, as Gombau once said, that his son is a shit goalkeeper.
The biggest problem was that Emerton was too much of a professional and team player. We would have been much better if he’d bullied and undermined the coach into letting him play down the right instead of allowing the last of his legs to be wasted at LM so that Lavička could squeeze Hiro and past-it Kisel into the XI.
This is a very common outcome of GG players signing for A-League clubs and it speaks to their self-regard.
Not many players would be better off bullying and undermining the coach. (maybe I missed the sarcasm).
The biggest issue with Emerton was that he started to get lower back pain which was causing an issue with his hammies. He mentioned it towards the end of his playing career.
It also speaks to the almost propaganda like nature of Euro-snobs and some of the media in trying to attack the A-League.
One of the issues with Emerton was that he was a good bit part player in decent teams in England.
He was known for defending and getting up and down the touchline with a great engine.
When he started slowing down there wasn’t much else there.
The Robbie Slater syndrome
Emmo was a 6.5/10 most games.
That’s great when you’re not a marquee player.
What a guy!
That was great, thanks for posting.
Future Australian captain. I’m sorry, I’m sorry, but he is.
