Australian National Team Thread - #PopaOut!

a double header against Ecuador is hardly exciting… no historic rivalry, not highly ranked, no big names…

playing against a team we generally don’t play against isn’t the worst thing though. In the World Cup, we didn’t really have rivalry against any of the teams… It will get the team playing against different styles and levels.

good for the team, no doubt, just not sure it is going to be a draw… one game perhaps but the double header is what makes me dubious

With the football calendar as it is this season there is no way we were getting someone from the top table to fly down here anyways.

The performance the Boys gave in Qatar is the draw for me. I can’t wait to get on my feet for them. Their opposition isn’t the draw for me.

It only makes sense that the team who travel here are going to play both their friendlies here given how removed we are from the rest of the world.

I get that, just thought one game would’ve created more of an event and guaranteed a sell out to see the World Cup heros

Having one each in the two most populated states gives more people the chance to come out and stand up. And more revenue for FA.

I have zero interest in going to Parramatta.

Some interesting call ups in the Roos squad

Redders made it haha

Very happy with some of those selections. Good to see Robertson picking Australia and Bos getting a call up in particular are very exciting

Irankunda also officially named as a train on player but may join the squad. Confusing wording could have just been announced as part of it.

Really happy with basically all the new faces. Some exciting young players there

Tuesday fun fact:

Alexander Robertson is the son of former Sydney FC player Mark Robertson who played 3 games for the club as cover for one Adam Casey.

And one of those games was the 5-4 Battle Of Bluetongue / Daft Punk game.

I assume when you say grassroots, you guys are talking about what is essentially the elite men’s competition… Because Rugby has experienced an almost unparalleled decline in Australian sports at the actual grassroots level. I live in rugby heartland and have watched our local club, a once very strong subbies club, unable to field teams and have to rebrand to get a wider catchment. I’m actually finding it hard to source numbers but I read not too long ago player participation numbers had dropped 70% which tracks with what anecdotally seen. It’s a canary in the coal mine for elite levels.

I came out of your typical rugby private school and I’ve also heard these days, the sporting landscape is a lot more diverse and there’s a big push away from funneling everyone in to rugby. I can’t really confirm that, as I don’t really give a shit about school rugby.

I’ve been reading a bit about him this morning. I find it interesting that he’s getting named to the City bench but last year couldn’t cut it at Ross County on loan. I notice Garang really appears to be struggling at Hearts too. Makes you wonder if SPL is really a good place for these kids to developing.

Probably not a lot to read into. Several reasons why he may have struggled at Ross County, as simple as not actually gelling with team mates/manager, etc.

I daresay Kuol is having the same issues that most Aussies have on their first foray overseas. Regardless of the league, even the SPL, it’s going to be a step up in the quality of the professionalism. It’s also a fuck tonne colder than he would have been used too, despite probably being well warned in advance. Moving to such a cold dreary place can be a massive shock to the system and can take some getting used too.

People forget that it happens here too. Plenty of European players come over to the A-League and are probably told it’s going to be stinking fucking hot, every fucking day, but they get here, and have 30 minutes of running around on the field are just absolutely struggling.

It can take up to a few months to properly acclimatize to not just a new country, or culture, but to the actual weather. Hell, it took Caballo a few months here at Sydney, and he’s played his career in Spain where it gets warm. Big Mak is proper struggling with the conditions even now.

I’m not too concerned about Kuol, it’s obviously been a massive culture, climate shock to him, and he’s having to learn a lot of new things. He’ll come good, hopefully. I would hate to see him waste this opportunity and come home because he’s finding the first 6 months a bit tough.

TBH, I don’t read anything into Kuol, really.

But Ross County is no better than an A League team from what I’ve seen so I still find it odd that Robertson bombed out of that loan. It’s made me temper my expectations…

You mean you wouldnt dine out on your place in the first XV, even though it was almost 20 years ago?!

Every single polo shirted, boat shoe wearing jock at Greenwood, I’m looking at all of you…
