Australian National Team Thread - #PopaOut!

Just spent two weeks in my FL team and was racking up the points in value.
Another example of why it’s a disgrace we can’t put Australia’s Shame players in our teams. I could hobble that Fornaroli geezer just like that, but stupid rule.

I mean you can sign him and take the yellow card hit?

I spent many minutes seriously contemplating that, but then there’s the risk of accidentally making a mistake later (e.g. under 3 Sydney players) and getting disqualified as a result. Too early in the game to take that one for the team.

Ive taken one for the team

Most refs will usually just give you a talking to this soon in the first half.

I don’t recall hearing this when opinions were invited.

Bummer, it certainly looked like he had more to offer.

I wonder if he had already been told he wouldn’t be in the Asian Cup squad and he decided he wasn’t up for competing in the next World Cup cycle. Or maybe he didn’t fancy sitting on a bench in Qatar during one of the busiest parts of the Championship season? Strange one.

Didn’t get the nod for Asia no doubt

The presser kind of reads like he was selected and rejected it tbh. Murmurs on Twitter to this effect too.

I can kind of see his point of view too. He’s kind of “been there, done that” with the Asian Cup and wouldn’t fancy his chances for 2026, but a season in the Prem would be a huge career highlight. An untimely injury, or just losing his spot by being away for a month would be a big problem.

There would also be a lot of pressure on players not to go to these tournaments that sit in the middle of a club season. The AFC need to try and get the tournament back to June/July so this issue can be rectified. It won’t be 2027 because Saudi Arabia are hosting it.

JMac has come out and said he isn’t selected for the Asian cup

Arnie making the big, and correct, calls. I’m happy to go into the Asian Cup with our choices at #9 being Duke, Fornaroli and Yengi.

JMac has had plenty of opportunities to make the position his own and has only used those chances to confirm he’s a flat-track bully at best.

He is also having a bit of a hissy fit making it public before it’s officially announced. He even alluded to maybe sort of retiring from the national team. Maybe well Luongo did so you never rule anything out etc . Fuck him and his shitty club

Can’t get fired if you quit first, I guess.

At least Luongo has a plausible explanation in chasing promotion. JMac is just throwing the toys out of the pram and still not hitting the target.

I am all for Yengi’s Portsmouth form getting him into the national side.

If we could also cap Robertson, that would be great. He and Yengi work well together and Robertson would be a great addition to the Socceroo ranks…

I assume you mean in a competitive fixture, because he’s already played for Aus, against Ecuador I think

I would absolutely take him over Maclaren.

Robertson should definitely go, especially as he’s on loan so won’t burn too many bridges going away
