Australian Women’s National Team Thread - Our best chance at a World Cup

It’s been a thing for years

Matildas is a too binary a name.

What. Seriously if you think this is the reason you’ve been smoking too much of Daddy Rupert’s stash.

Australians have been shortening things for so long, Wikipedia literally says “Records of the use of diminutives in Australian English date back to the 1800s.”

C’mon mate, it was clearly a joke. Lighten up.

There’s a Jimoen bit that’s stuck with me for years that basically goes, “Met a fella who was a big fan and he said, can I call you ‘Jimmy’ for short? I said to him you can fella but I dunno if you’re going to be saving much time.”

Tilly is a common shortening of Matilda, I thought.

So made sense to me.

Also has been in use for our national team for aaaages (but not sure if that’s the specific length you’re looking for!)

Fair enough, I have only heard it consistently during this world cup (although until now, I haven’t watched loads of womens football)

A nickname on a nickname confused me but I am a simpleton who simply calls national teams by their names.

You always call them the Westfield Matildas?

Nope, i call them Australia

Surely can shorten that to straya?

Aussies? Poms? Argies, Krauts, Saffas, Yanks??

I thought we were the convicts?

At least we don’t call them Team Australia like Team USA do. Really annoys me for some reason

I always assumed they were referring to contract lengths. You know: Stajcic is our coach 'tilly starts performing well…

Don’t worry. The clock is ticking before they get renamed to the “Tills”.

The Wazza Matazzas.

Even worse, they are often called the USWNT
