Australian Women’s National Team Thread - Our best chance at a World Cup

The title of the thread still rings true

Only 14 players played more than 30 minutes all tournament.

And that would have been 13 if Kennedy didn’t take a head knock.

How many World Cups are left for Kerr, Foord, Simon and Kennedy? Maybe one, if they have a good run with injuries, two if they pull a Sinclair?

The following players have surely played their last World Cup:

Lydia Williams
Avie Luik
Clare Polkinghorne
Kyah Simon

The following have possibly played their last World Cup:

Emily van Egmond
Tameka Yallop
Katrina Gorry
Emily Gielnik

So that is up to seven players (eight if you include Gielnik) that may need replacing by the next World Cup. And if we take the second list into account, that leaves an enormous hole in the middle of the park.

Replacements in the squad could be a few of the following:

Jada Whyman (GK)
Kirsty Fenton (LB)
Sarah Hunter (DM)
Mackenzie Hawkesby (CM)
Indiana dos Santos (CM/AM)
Chloe Logarzo (AM)
Remy Siemsen (ST)

From Chris Minns twitter:

The stadium where the Matildas made history in so many ways, is getting a huge Matildas mural.

This giant mural that we’re commissioning at Stadium Australia will celebrate their historic success.

Featuring the greatest moments of the Matildas World Cup run, it’ll be seen by the 10 million people who visit Sydney Olympic Park each year.

Serving as a permanent reminder of how the Matildas run at this World Cup captured the imagination of the nation.

All the while inspiring the next generation of Aussie athletes.

Because for too long, our major stadiums and stands have failed to recognise the incredible sporting achievements of Aussie female athletes.

So ignore 25yrs of other sporting history, including from the Socceroos.

Can see the big NRL heavies reacting to this.

Who gives a flying fuck about the potential opinions of NRL heavies, especially the likes of Phil Gould?

My first thought was “How cool is that!”

My second thought was “What a convenient way to make it look like you’re supporting women’s sport without actually investing any real money in women’s sport.”

Nailed. Tremendously hollow gesture that’ll be replaced with the next thing that captures the national attention

It’s utterly appropriate (not of the team but of these parasites’ commitment) in that it’s literally nothing but a facade.

COVID kind of killed Amy concept of years.

The Tillies’ next scheduled game is against Iran, so, Man no English. Chi is Matildas?

Edit: The Tillies next Matildas game!?

Was coming here to post similar. On the flip side theres a decent core

Arnold
Carpenter-Hunt-Kennedy-Catley
Cooney-Croos- ???
Raso/Vine- Fowler-Foord
Kerr

Bench: Micah, Grant, Wheeler, Vine, Chidiac

Basically the whole XI bar Gorry (who will need a lot of replacing she was incredible).

And for the players you mention as possible replacements, theres a lot of decent options there already.

4 years to figure out a Gorry replacement and how to get Fowler/Kerr to work

Given the way Indiana dos Santos has started in the ALW, it would not surprise me at all if we see her with a more-than-equal shout of making the 2027 squad. One of the very best female teenager football talents I’ve ever seen.

That mural looks like it’ll be done on louvres, which means it could be rotated or turned so that any NRL types don’t have to see it and be offended when they use the stadium.

So most of the money is going towards Rugby and AFL? Who didn’t see that coming.

Heard today at a corporate thing

“we are looking to support our front line teams - think of team a as sam kerr, team b as Caitlin Foord and team c as Mary Fowler”

It looks trite when written down but it was super natural, everyone got it and said corporate is a major sponsor of women’s football.

It put a smile on my face that it was just completely expected that the crowd knew all those names, and that they were all attackers

Gotta love FIFA rankings. Post world cup we’ve fallen from 10th to 11th.

And England stay 4th.

But it’s the rolling 12 months yeah?

We had 3W1D3L, and got overtaken by a team (Japan) with 4W0D1L.
