Real shame. Should have gone with Newy instead of Melbourne. Proper football town, Newy. Melbourne is the sporting capital of Aussie Rules.
I would’ve replaced Brisbane with Newcastle, honestly. Brisbane did a lot to harm their chances of getting regular international fixtures by putting up very poor playing surfaces for the Socceroos. There’s no suggestion they’ll do any better for the Matildas. Newcastle have supported the Matildas quite well with the few opportunities they’ve had, and I don’t remember any complaints about the playing surface.

Really sucks for Newy, especially as stated given the great support they’ve shown the Matilda’s. Probably should’ve arsed Adelaide imo, it’s easily the shittest city in the country with precisely zero redeeming features, but also what are they going to do venue-wise? You’ve got Adelaide Oval which goes against the round venue criteria cited for Launceston missing out, or Coopers which albeit perfect for AU is surely not suitable by any FIFA standards.

Glad Hindmarsh is getting an upgrade, it’s been in need of a second covered grandstand for a long time.
Can anyone explain to me what the actual point of the roofing on these stands is? Because it certainly isn’t to protect the people sitting in the stands from any elements.

It’s for the Clover Moore’s of the world, who might occasionally be driven down Anzac Parade or Moore Park Road, but never actually be in attendance when the rain starts to pour down furing during an event.

Nevermind that the first game is on the same day as the W-League GF, that the squad has been announced <14 days before the games, or that spending an entire month in quarantine there and back may not be the ideal preparation for an athlete in an Olympic year.
