Bolting from the Blue- The Central Coast Mariners Thread

I wonder if Wood would like to start every week playing beside him?

Get off my lawn!!!

Nah, he has two great strikers to work with in Bobo and Le Frondre.

Urena has been a good egg for the Mariners this season. He’s only 31 so he’s still got a couple more seasons left in him at least I’d say.

If the Mariners can convince some decent foreign quality to Gosford next season, with their youth players they can still be a threat. God knows they’ve had some shockers over the last handful of seasons. Literally getting Sheffield United’s dregs.

Hands off our Wood!

Urena didn’t have a preseason. Came straight out of iso to play the next week.

Damn. That is dire.

I know it’s a joke and there are reasons for it etc.

But after the season the Mariners had, the mere suggestion that the Mariners would be happy with poaching an 18yo scholarship player for their starting #9, is just incredibly saddening.

As a young striker you will always struggle to get game time at a large club because this is where the big clubs throws there big dollars at.

Wood is better off at the Mariners than Sydney for the following reasons:

  • increased chance of game time
  • the mentoring he will receive from Urena and the GOAT which cancels out any mentoring he would have received from players like Le Fondre and Bono
  • less pressure to perform at a smaller club in the minutes you do get
  • Mariners long history of developing young players that gain overseas contracts

Yeah, but he’s already doing fine here so jog on sunshine.

You’d be better off going after Ivanovic, Swibel or even bringing Buhagiar back.
As the #3 striker next season, Pat Wood will see plenty of game time with us.

Will he though? He played 464 minutes all season, despite the fact that Alf was brought in right towards the end. It also includes the fact that Wood played 464 minutes for Sydney FC over 19 games , so 25 minutes a game.

I’d argue that as a striker it’s much better playing for a bigger club that has more experienced players as they will provide you with better service.

Wood didn’t start the season as the #3 striker though. He had Kosta, Buhagiar & Ivanovic ahead of him. I think even Swibel got a run before him.
There’s a lot more minutes available for him here next season and while there may be more available for him at CCM will they be quality minutes or playing time spent up front in a struggling team?

Isn’t the general consensus that game time is always more beneficial than training time?

Taking emotion out of it, if there was interest from CCM, hes probably third striker behind Urena and Simon as well as here if its clear hes moved past Buhagier and Ivanovic but Simon is likely to spend more time on the bench. Theres also the variable of how much minutes Bobo and ALF are fit for.

But weighing that up and knowing we dont have a great record recently of turning youth into regular minutes (besides King who was forced into it with Zullo injured and who knows if Hoff didnt have the back injury that was reported so late) Id probably take the move as its worked better for Tilio (a player who was ahead of him last season) and Devlin.

That said the Mariners would benefit from a pacy striker for the counter and Wood’s not particularly quick compared to Buhagier, Ivanovic or Swibel so on that the later three are better fits for Mariners

Oh no doubt it’d be great for him. Probably great for us too, to send a player out to one of our feeder clubs and bring them back in if we need him, or get a portion of the fee if you sell him overseas?

Just depressing that that’s the Mariners lot in life. To be excited by the prospect of helping us develop our players…

Or looking from a different direction, Mariners fans can watch an exciting hungry young player being given a proper go while we watch a guy in his mid 30s moving around the pitch like an oil tanker.

Or from another direction, we can watch our team win 3 Championships in the last 5 years, while the Central Coast fans hope to avoid another wooden spoon…

If you want to watch young players we have a youth team you can go watch.

The Mariners came third and have retained the majority of their squad. What makes you think they will be battling for the spoon next season?

I’m talking about last and next season, not 5 years ago. Because despite spending significantly more than Mariners last season, we didn’t win anything, amassed a whole 5 points more and what’s more, I’d bet pretty much every single one of their fans had a far more memorable and enjoyable season than pretty much every single one of ours had.
If we continue with Project Gerentophile, we’ll see how we go next season. I’m pretty sure we’ll do better than CCM, but only because their owner is horrible. But we won’t get close to City again.
