Everything is on fire - the US politics thread

That should have had a content warning.

Oh the gore! Look at all the blood! I feel queasy now.

US politics was a lot more fun pre-Trump - the Onion’s ā€œDiamond Joeā€ series was awesome: The Onion - America's Finest News Source

This one came up in my Facebook memories today - a more innocent time for sure: Biden Busted In DNC Parking Lot Selling Bootleg ā€˜I’m With Her’ T-Shirts

4 more years, you won’t have to vote again, it’ll be fixed.

It won’t make a difference to the nutters that want to cancel cultures.

Trump showing his true intentions

And people still ask how the German’s let Hitler gain power in the 1930s.

Well, you start with the great powers colonisation race of the late 19thC …

Yeah but how did they become big powers? You need to look at the Prussian Reformation before you look at colonialism

FFS. Then we need the French Revolution, the rise of Napoleon and the dismantling of The Holy Roman Empire.

Don’t try to out history nerd Hilly - you won’t win…

so you’re actually going to discuss the Fall of the Holy Roman Empire without even trying to cover the Protestant Reformation? I mean do you actually even care about history?

im currently on episode 150 of a podcast on the History of Ancient Rome, very much a history nerd, even though it mainly revolves around European history

Are you trying to ignore the divination of the Roman Empire here or something?

Im assuming your talking about the Etruscan influence on divination?

You can’t just throw ā€œEtruscanā€ out there without referencing Romulus and Remus.

Well you can! Etruscans were there well before the legend that was the founding of Rome!

Well fine.

If you want to ignore the Estrucan link to Romulus and Remus, and how that leads to the foundation of the Kingdom of Rome which leads to The Republic of Rome, which leads to to the Roman Empire, which leads to the divination of the Roman Empire in the Western and Eastern Roman Empires, which leads to the formation of the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, the Protestant Reformation, The Scottish Enlightenment, the French Revolution, The rise of Napoleon, the Prussian Reformantion, The great Powers competing for land in Africa leading to the rise of tensions that resulted in the first world war, the depletion of resources in Germany leading to the armistice and Treaty of Versailles which placed honourous reparations on Germany which led to ridiculous inflation in the Wiemer Republic, which allowed a populist Adolf Hitler to gain a position from which to seize power … well, I just don’t think I can take you seriously.

hold on, there’s no definitive link between Romulus and Remus and Etruscan civilization. In fact Etruria didn’t exist as a separate entity by the time the legend was properly established in the 3rd Century BC. While Rome did coopt many Etrurian customs, there’s no real stories in Ancient Etruria that could be linked to the founding fathers of Rome. In fact Romulus and Remus are established as being born in a Latin city rather than Hellenic city. The legend on the formation of Rome may well have come from Latin legends or have been influenced by later Hellenic ties, but to say Etruria was linked to that particular legend could be seen as a bit of stretch.

We just went back 2500 years to explain the rise of Hitler.

I’m allowed a bit of stretch.
