Everything is on fire - the US politics thread

At the risk of sounding old fashioned - especially women?

Can’t recall saying people should be shot. I just pointed out they should minimise their risk.

It was reference to this image below which is clearly not day time.

American law enforcement aren’t generally known for their cognitive function when it comes to grievously injuring unarmed civilians.

I’d agree with this, but the aussie reporter was shot by an LAPD officer, not national guard. At the same time Drumpf and the state governer were at each other about the unneeded escalation. So not part of the grand autocratic plan and more likely a reflection of the trigger-happy police culture

I reckon journalists should wear bright clothes like they do in Gaza.

Do you want to know what FW stands for?

They didn’t miss!

Bit different when they are dropping bombs on them as opposed to shooting them.

Gazans aren’t also rioting in front of a line of Israeli troops with journalists in between them.

Just a few things from this, the still has actually nothing to do with the incident. I did a quick read and apparently what happened was prior to the broadcast, he was on the floor interviewing protestors as they were taking cover. He was about 10 minutes from actually doing his live broadcast.

In saying that, it’s still 100% the responsibility of the police to ensure they’re not firing and hitting innocent individuals that may be caught up in the rioting. Indiscriminate shooting that may literally hit anyone is disgusting. The Police would have 100% been briefed on the fact that the press will be in the crowd, I refuse to believe that there isn’t a standing order not to shoot at the press, while also taking into account there will be foreign press present. Especially when negotiating trade deals, how dumb do you have to be to shoot and injure foreigners.

On top of that, I would actually say it’s better off wearing dark clothing to ensure you’re literally not a target. If a giant camera, microphone and the words ā€œPressā€ on the front and back aren’t enough to dissuade someone from being shot at, then wearing a bright fluoro vest in a see of black is going to paint a target on your back

Not withstanding his clothing, there’s been multiple incidents of regular people being shot, that have nothing to do with the riots. You had the Aussie reporter a few days ago that was an obvious target, but yesterday there was literally a video of a woman politely trying to get through a Police line. There was no rioting nearby, she informed the Police that the entrance to her home was literally 10m behind them, they refused to let her pass and then shot her. If that’s not a reason as to why LA is kicking off, then I don’t know what is.

On another note, it looks like the National Guard hasn’t actually been used to stop the rioting. What does look like is happening, is that someone forgot that they need to be quartered somewhere and that soldiers would generally like to eat and have some water from time to time…

The bill would have permitted 16- and 17-year-olds to work overnight on school days and work longer than an eight-hour day before a school day. Some 14- and 15-year-olds would also have been allowed to work those hours.

They are just insane.

Someone has to do the jobs that republican voting Americans don’t want to do

The funniest part of that, it was based on the fact that they would be losing a lot of labour by deporting illegal immigrants. So they’d rather have their kids working massive hours, then to just let immigrants work

Maybe they’re not losing labour… just locking it in cheaper. Throw them in detention where they can work for $1 a day for a private prison company, that feeds ā€œdonationsā€ back to political parties

And immediately unblocked by an appeals court 2.5 hours later.

The June 11 ABC Conversation podcast with Hugh White, ā€œOur Post American Futureā€ is worth a listen.
