First Gear-Grind of the new Forum

Yeah but those geniuses inevitably end up fixing the problem. So clearly you are all wrong.

By getting someone else to fix it or by replacing the item. Nobel prize level stuff right there.

Have Intel and AMD chips moved onto the smaller process to match Apple silicon for power consumption yet?

Time for a literal gear grind.

My 2013 Nissan Pulsar was having issues for a little while now that got significantly worse a couple of weeks ago when we drove back from Canberra. I thought it was probably a transmission issue. Took it to the mechanic on Friday and he couldn’t get it to fault but was able to identify a different issue that needed to be fixed. So that was $850.

The very next day I go to drive down to Wollongong and the car transmission dies just after the hills around Engadine. Get the car towed to the mechanic who let’s me know that this is a common problem with newer model Nissan Pulsars and that the engines have had a recall in the US apparently. But not here… Apparently the engines start to degrade from 20k km.

Anyway he says he’ll take a look but warns me to brace myself for it being bad. Sure enough, looks like it’s going to be about $6k to fix it and it’s probably just going to recur again in future.

So now I’m looking for a new car, and still probably going to have to pay for the transmission just to preserve the trade in value of the rest of the car which is in good running order and only has 70k on the odometer.

Anyway, looking at a new Toyota Corolla Hybrid Sedan. Has anyone had any experience with recent Toyota Hybrids?

I bought a RAV 4 hybrid new about 4 years ago and love it. It is an extremely comfortable car to drive, probably the best in that regard that I have ever owned. Phenomenal acceleration. Very noticeable if you get caught behind something slow on the Mooney bridge hill. Wait for a gap, pull out and you are back to 110k within seconds.
50 litre fuel tank gives around 900k range, depending on how heavy you are with the right foot.

The only issue I had was the wait time for delivery. No idea what it is like now. Zero problems.

Extremely strong recommendation.

We have a Rav 4 Hybrid as well. Really happy with it. The only things I hate are the automated boot closing and the beeping at sometimes random times/when reversing etc with no options to mute. Doesn’t help when you have kids in the car trying to sleep.

The last i’d heard though, there’s still a really long wait list. My mate ordered about 2 years ago and just got his one a few months ago

I hired a Camry hybrid a couple of years ago and quite liked it. It used about the same amount of fuel I would have expected my 650cc moto to use on the same trip.

Also, I’m chasing a tranny issue on a Santa fe and whilst talking to a mechanic he indicated that the transmissions in Toyota hybrids are very good.

I’m thinking of finding the oldest practical manual I can find because I’m over these modern CVT transmissions.

I like manuals, hate automatics but love CVT.

Yeah everything I’ve read indicates that Toyota have really nailed it, particularly in their hybrid motors.

It was the CVT that failed in the Pulsar. Never buying a Nissan with one again.

Thailand trip gone wrong?

Mate… there with you.

VE commodore - first the fuel injectors, then ignition coils & spark plugs, and now the ECU needed replacing. All up about about 8 grand - thankfully I had a warranty for some of it which knocked off about 2800 from memory. Anything else major and it’s good money after bad and will be time for a new car.

Clearly New Mexico.

The shit themselves and cost waaaay to much money to replace aspect of CVTs.

$12500 for a reco box replacement.

I hired a Toyota Yaris Hybrid last year for a week to saunter around the Cotswolds and I was surprised at how much I loved it. Really comfortable drive and it was great, both on the motorway from London and on the small country roads.

My wife has a Corolla hybrid, which she loves, and I like.

My car isn’t a hybrid.

Just saw a number plate with a hashtag on it, it took every ounce of self restraint I have not to pull a pit manoeuvre and send you into a fucking tree #NIKEE

My next vehicle will likely be a Corolla hybrid. Apparently the model’s longevity is pretty impressive.

My wife wants an Audi A1.

I’d rather that 60K be spent on an i30 N - which will inevitably be cheaper to run in the long term, and is probably twice as fast. I’d even still prefer an AWD car over both, but they don’t seem to make too many in a smaller sized vehicle.

I need to kill some noisy miner birds who keep shitting on our current car before I pull the trigger though. They are really gear grinding, and a protected species. So I clearly can’t kill them…assholes.

Pretty sure my parents “rehome” the noisy minors, into a hole in the yard

Only the Australian one is protected.
The Indian Minor is an introduced species and I believe it’s listed as a pest.

I think the way you can tell the difference is the colour of the beak

Also one is grey and one is brown
