Imagine if this jimmy h bloke was around during the RoT.
We have been pretty ordinary.
I do like the trophies though.
If finishing top two and winning grand finals is somehow bad, then I am ok with bad.
Are you ok with how ordinary the rest of the league is?
Someone last week published the blue print that Arnold brought to the club. It’s something many of us suggested was the way to approach a salary capped league back before on TWGF before the A-League started. Yet no one else appears to be even trying to emulate it?
It took an unprecedented season interruption and our teams disinterest for the remainder of the regular season for anyone else to perform better than us. And we are a less complete team with less depth than we were 3 years ago.
Finishing top and winning Grand Finals is fucking aces. It’s what it’s all about.
But how long until we get an SPL Celtic post Rangers air of inevitability about it? One of the strengths of our league is avoiding the procession of Bayern Munich winning ever fucking year. And the rest of our league is in a constant rebuilding phase and we appear to be slowly coming back to the pack.
As a professional sports entertainment product in our market we can’t afford for the rest of the comp to phone it in.
That’s up to them.
We’ve already given half the league a coach, what more can we do?
Invest in a couple of Milos?
As a club we got our shit together. It’s no secret how we did it and the example is there for all others to follow. If they choose not to or can’t get their shit together to do so, then that’s on them. Ideally they would and make the overall product better across the board. But that’s not the world we live in I guess.
Meanwhile, we’ve done well, Corica has done well and as long as we continue to be better than those around us I don’t see too much point in complaining.
Jimmy_H’s thoughts are proudly brought to you by the Ange Postecoglou School of Football.
FWIW, I love our style of football under Bimbi. Many others I know do feel the same. But we can agree to disagree over style preferences (beauty is in the eye …) but not about the objective successes of his tenure.
If you want to criticise him for not getting another near-peak Adrian, Jordi B and peak Brandon, we might wish to consider that Corica does not control the budget available from the club, salary cap or not. And we will never probably find a player and human being of Brosque’s quality: willing to play on minimum wages so that others can fit under the cap and so maximise the squad’s strength. Finally, if the Board/CEO told Bimbi that they preferred not to chuck in more money because they thought he still had enough quality across the squad after Brandon left, they were correct. We really missed Brandon’s play but we were still strong enough as a group to clearly beat out the rest.
Except thats not what I said. You took what I said out of context.
All a coach can do is win. Corica is doing that.
The standard of the league is average at best, and we are the best team in it, playing the best football. I am not sure what more we can expect?
Sure, Corica is winning. And the league is average. Corica is winning in an average league.
Does that make Corica a great coach or an average coach?
Does anyone think, given what we’ve seen over the years, that Corica got the best out of Barbarouses this season?
I think it’s really hard to soar to great heights when the competition is such a shambles. The team did what they did this year, looked pretty unconvincing for a lot of games, maybe even lost the majority on xG, but still won the double because we have key individuals who could deliver at the key moments - no howlers from the CBs, Redders makes a killer save, Alfie with a sharp finish.
But for them to be challenged, some fucker has to challenge them. It’s why I disparage the opposition a lot. Not for the bants but because we all need to do better.
Honestly an above average coach at best, which still makes him the best option for this competition.
I think he’s started really well, but the transition he’ll have to manage over the next 2 seasons is where we’ll see how good he can become. Whether he can add to the “able custodian”/“steady hand” side of things and become a genuine problem solver. Once the only Arnie-era players in the starting 11 are Reggers and Grant.
The best coach in the world will not produce a team that wins silverware if they are plying their trade in a dysfunctional club. In the last four seasons there were 12 trophies on offer and we won 7 of them. This could not have happened with two different coaches and a greater than 50% turnover of the team without a stable and effective club supporting the on-field team.
So the real question isn’t “Is Bimbi a good coach?“ (he is). The real question is - “Is David Traktovenko the best owner in the A-League” to which I say overwhelmingly YES.
A few points:
In terms of trophies, number 1 example is NWSW winning Champions League. We’ve been giving them crap over the years of how bad the win was. You can’t objectively give them crap and accept that it doesn’t matter how SFC wins, as long as they win.
In terms of playing, we’ve definitely dropped off this year in comparison to the three previous years. A fair few games have been scraped through and we haven’t looked nearly as dominating as we did previously. In terms of the reasons why, it’s due to the average age of our key players. We still win, but the younger legs that previously dominated are slowing. We actually have the second oldest squad in average age in the competition (second to Perth). The big issue is that it’s heavily skewed by Wilkinson (36), ABJ (33) Ninko (35), Alf (32). Take out ABJ, then the 3 biggest players on the team are definitely up there in age. To still be winning with an older team is pretty amazing.
On whether Corica is an amazing coach or not. No, he’s not amazing. Is he good, yes, he’s good. In saying that, amazing is the Arnold era, where we had someone turn around a team that was in a worse situation than NWSW and turn it into both a dominating force and also a team where players wanted to play for. Corica’s job has been more about continuing the course and building on the success created by Arnold, which is easier than building it from scratch. In saying that, you can’t take away from the actual success. You only need to look at Man U with Ferguson, He built up an amazing team, stepped down after winning the league and the very next year they finished 7th. It’s not easy to continue down the path of success.
I don’t disagree that we give WSW grief for the appalling way they won the Champions league but, if you ask them, or poppa or the players - they couldn’t give two shits. The simple matter is they won it.
Do Chelsea fans complain that they won the champions league on penalties having been completely outplayed by Munich? Nope. Couldn’t care less.
I’d suggest that the vast majority of fans would take results over style any day of the week. If you can combine the two then awesome.
the issue comes when you are like the WSW are now, with no style and no results
