Why does Victoria, followed by ACT have the most complex state league pyramid?
Population density.
My question is more simply “Why does Victoria?”
“Why? Victoria.”
I read that as population stupidity.
Huh,
Jack Hingert is representing Sri Lanka. Turns out his old man is Sri Lankan.
Or if the then-FFA had come out and backed fans in 2015, rather than weakly acquiescing to mainstream institutions harbouring a historic mistrust of football?
Good article. ‘To be actively engaged in the A-league is exhausting.’
I’ve definitely felt this over the last several seasons after the constant streams of crises, most of which are self-inflicted. It’s culminated in me attending and watching the fewest a-league games in any season and seriously considered not renewing my membership.
I’d like nothing more though for them to get it right and for the league to be the success we know it can be.
I think I went to 1 game.
But a lot of exhaustion comes from the fan base it’s self. The league is constantly not good enough for them. The coverage is constantly not good enough. The crowds are not constantly good enough.
Relax, take a load off and just enjoy the thrill of Caceras using his left foot once every 180 minutes of game time!
Amen to that. With the added frustration: VAR exists because fans will Never be satisfied with refereeing performances.
I was exhausted by the league this year, watching fewer and fewer non SFC games. I assumed that after what is it, 18 years or so that things just have gotten a little stale for diehards, same teams basically every year, nothing ‘new’ to add even a small amount of additional interest.
Then I took my boys both the their first ever games this season, and remembered what it is like to just go because you like football and a beer and crappy stadium hotdog - and that results of the derby or the style of play or standard of coverage or whether some buzzkill from the telegraph thinks the game is stupid is all sometimes just so ridiculous poured over by anoraks to a degree where that enjoyment is just sucked out of the league.
Even this peak a-league rubbish is just so self defeating and nonsense. My 7 year old watches ‘football try not to laugh / blooper’ youtubes all the time, Woods miss was on there but so were misses from every standard of league around the world and some of the most famous high end players in modern football history playing in the most famous high end leagues in world have faaar more entries than the A-League does on these things /endrant
The leagues also great because its our league. Sure the leagues “franchises” but Sydney FC is still my local team that I can watch every weekend (for 6 months a year) at a reasonable time. Sure I’ve been a fan of Liverpool for longer but least Sydney FC isnt a major global corporation and some billionaire toy that plays a bit of football live every big team in Europe.
And absolutely echo some of the peak A-League stuff. Didn’t Darwin Nunez miss one pretty much as bad as Wood around a similar time?
100% agree with the sentiment, although I will raise that the refereeing this season was just absolutely wrong. They could not have gotten it more wrong if they actually tried.
This is also a world wide trend though at the moment right - I suspect since VAR was introduced and has increased the viewing of refereeing decisions that were incorrect - managers and fans seem to be complaining about the standard or refs the world over.
I’m quite happy to accept bad referee decisions. Players make bad decisions. Coaches make bad decisions.
What I’m not happy to accept is the terrible decisions after 3 minutes of slo mo review.
This more than anything else. It is the biggest negative in our game.
I’ll also add extremely inconsistent decisions that range from a red to play on. I can accept a borderline decision between yellow and red, or foul and yellow, or play on and foul, but I can’t accept that a decision can range from playing on, to a straight red card. That just speaks to complete and utter incompetence.
Cristiano missed an even worse one than Patty literally days after that Gosford game.
