It's OK to be White and other dogwhistles - the Australian politics thread

If you want industry policy you do it strategically rather than randomly putting a thumb on the scales in procurement.

If you want to prop up one business in particular, be very clear about it, and also take the blowback head on.

It’s not just FTAs - general procurement practices don’t allow that sort of thing.

On FTAs though, for every business complaining about overseas competition there’s another begging for overseas market access. The big thing here is that we need

fair trade, not free trade ,

that takes account of environment, labour and social practices and seeks to apply a properly level playing field. Trade absolutely brings jobs and benefits, but it can’t be us opening up and everyone else taking advantage.

There’s a guy in Dubbo getting into printing buildings. Looks to be something like 70% cheaper to build a house. Once this tech gets proved things could happen.

So I browse reddit but dont have an account or anything and just get whatever default stuff comes up for the front page in Australia. Shockingly often the australian circle jerk sub - home of racism, xenophobia, sexism and general stupidity - gets on there with multiple posts every day. Cookies cleared every session so it’s not prioritising it based on what I’ve seen or clicked before.

Saw this one today. The second photo was from an anti-war/pro gaza/lebanon march.

Any other reddit readers see this shit there regularly? Absolute scum on there. You ever think we dont have a problem in this country with racism, xenophobia, sexism etc then pop your head in there occasionally. It’s about a thousand times worse than ā€œaustralianā€. It’s definitely getting some kind of artificial boosting given the membership level comparative to other subs.

Sincerely hope ASIO is on that shit 24/7.

Pretty sure the circle jerk subs are supposed to be sarcastic. That one is part sarcastic part psycho.

Probably how they concept started, these days it just seems to be the accepted (internet) way to be involved in hate groups.

There’s a bunch of shit that starts off as bored shitposters and they got gradually more serious. And that thread of conspiratorial shitposting led (directly or indirectly) to pizzagate, QAnon and the stop the steal movement.

Reddit broadly has shown it’s ass in the past year. I’m amazed every time I accidentally end up in one of the main subbreddits and it’s just anti arab xenophobia all over the place. The r/worldnews comment sections on any Palestine article are awful.

And the circlejerk subs, almost by design, just end up being hate filled. I was (briefly thankfully) one of the moderators for squared circle, the biggest wrestling sub. I was unfortunately there at the time a trans wrestler debuted and every time we banned some cunt for transphobia you can see in their history it was mostly posts in the wrestling circlejerk sub.

Just a nightmare hellscape on there are soon as you stray away from the niche parts you go there for.

Nope. Because like Twitter, Insta and Bookface my feeds are curated.

Algorithms look for engagement. Shit like what you shared is what gets engagement.

I recco getting an account and following mademesmile and other feel good subs.

curating your reddit feed is the only way to navigate that fucking hellsite., the main subs are most astroturfed racist shithole web pages outside of 4chan. mademesmile is just ā€œfeelgoodā€ stories about some kid who sold lemonade to help pay for his parents hospital visit or some other dystopian shit that shouldn’t happen in a normal functioning society. cunt of a website. dont even get me started on the redditisms the leak into every corner of the internet.

Not sure if this is here or the Middle East thread, but someone got creative with the ban on Hezbollah material at protests this weekend:

Oh no, won’t somebody think of the landlords
supermarkets and energy retailers …

Most renters will spend more per week on rent than they will on a quarterly electricity bill. Goes to show how much the inane soundbites have made it into people’s head that more people think energy costs are important to fix than housing

Not a fan of this sub but it has the clip I wanted to link.

What is this moron talking about?

So the NBN has paid government loans off… and that’s some insidious reason for the government to want to keep a government asset? I don’t even understand what logic she is trying to present. I’m also not even sure what she’s referencing. I checked the media release of their FY24 financial performance and saw this:

The company refinanced the remaining balance of $5.5 billion relating to the $19.5 billion Commonwealth Government loan in full by 30 June 2024. NBN Co’s capital strategy remains focused on funding network investments and maintaining a strong liquidity position.

So refinanced not repaid. Am I missing something here?

We really seem to have a bunch of low rent low effort neo-lib bastards. Yet people still buy into it all.

The absolute state of this cunt

The fucking worst

This Albanese buying a house talk is exhausting.

Littleproud said that he could not afford to buy a $4.3m home and that ā€œmost politicians, at the end of the politics, can’t afford that, in terms of the salary we haveā€.

The host noted that Littleproud has ā€œa couple of housesā€ and his wife ā€œhas a fewā€

Yeah but none of my houses are worth $4 million
