It's OK to be White and other dogwhistles - the Australian politics thread

ā€œTo be sovereign you have to be of the land,ā€ she said. ā€œHe is not of this land.ā€

Does someone want to break it to her?

Itā€™s an interesting one. She wonā€™t bring people along with her, but her actions do bring talk, and talk might well bring change one day.

She may be crazy but at least sheā€™s consistent. I donā€™t agree with her most of the time, and want to think itā€™s a ridiculous act, but tbh I can kinda understand it. Sheā€™s not hurting anyone, and it is entirely keeping within her goals to recognise sovereignty never ceded etc. What better way to express your dissatisfaction with colonialism than direct to the monarch?

Thorpe is somewhat of a lunatic but for the most part agree with kisel. Also happy to see someone disrupting this garbage.

Iā€™d be interested to know how many of you could in all good conscience swear true allegiance to the monarch and their heirs? I certainly couldnā€™t.

Swearing-in

The Constitution provides that every Member of the House of Representatives, before taking his or her seat, must make and subscribe an oath or affirmation of allegiance before the Governor-General or some person authorised by the Governor-General.[58] The oath or affirmation takes the following form:

OATH

I, A.B., do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Her heirs and successors according to law. SO HELP ME GOD!

AFFIRMATION

I, A.B., do solemnly and sincerely affirm and declare that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Her heirs and successors according to law.[59]

Youā€™ll note that thereā€™s nothing in that oath about bearing true allegiance to the people of this country that they represent.

I wonder what would happen if it was challenged in court. Which bit of democracy triumphs? The person being democratically elected by the electorate knowing that they do not have allegiance to the monarch? Or the fact a random foreigner is the head of state?

Should just become a republic.

We tried that and the Monarchists pummelled the Republicans with a media campaign which the recent ā€œNoā€ campaign used to the letter.

My suspicion is that the drafters figured thereā€™s no need?

Parliamentarians are elected of the people, by the people. Whatā€™s the point of swearing allegiance? If we donā€™t like them we can just vote them out in a few years?

Itā€™s also not to the commonwealth. Itā€™s to the monarch. Itā€™s a legacy of the Empire. It was written when people still saw Australia as an extension of Britain (if a somewhat independent one) and certainly part of the Empire still, but represents even older attitudes. The monarch is the country - not the people. Yet 124 years later weā€™re still saying the same stuff, pledging allegiance to the same family as if weā€™re still in the age of the Sun King.

You donā€™t find it a bit odd that when a representative is elected they dont swear to allegiance to the country or the people but to a single person and their heirs? Or even just to faithfully execute their responsibilities?

Take a look at what that Orange Fuckstick Von Trumpet is planning on doing in the US, and thatā€™s with a pledge. Far too much of western political systems are based on the belief that people will act with integrity instead of fucking forcing them to.

Whereā€™s the part about resisting their enemies?

Part timers.

I dont know a lot about oaths but to me, this oath only seems to have legs with god fearing men. It wouldnt surprise me if people just say it to get a cushy job as a politician.

Haha it gets better, now saying she actually swore allegiance to queen Elizabeth and her Hairs. I really struggle to deal with people who take her loud and aggressive approach, but this is great for the lolz.

And for those questioning her spot, what a joke. Gunna kick out any republic advocates who clearly arenā€™t showing great allegiance to the monarch? Parliament should be a place to debate different and controversial ideas, thatā€™s the point of parliamentary privilege right? Sheā€™ll be gone at the next election, but canā€™t argue she hasnt used her time to make at least some impact (could argue she couldā€™ve used it better to make a bigger impact).

Shes now retracted that statement and said she made a mistake as her grammer isnt good. This is what shits me about politicians. They make a statement and then retract it the moment they realised theyve fucked up with some complete bs excuse. They should 100% be held to what theyve said.

Iā€™m really trying hard to take Lidia Thorpe seriously, but she doesnā€™t make it easy for me.

Sheā€™s taken the opposite path to Jacqui Lambie.

The libs can go fuck themselves but I cant see this as anything other than straight graft.

I do find it weird that the libs are trying to make out this never happened before Albanese became PM.

Isnā€™t the implication that it influenced the call to reject the application of Qatar getting more flights in and out of Australia?
