A big start to life in the 3rd tier for Omiya Ardija, surely they will want to end the humiliation of having fallen down so far, by only spending one year down here. A 4-1 win is a good statement of intent.

Exciting win for Kewell’s first game. I only saw the last 20 mins or so but they looked pretty lucky not to lose. Lucky penalty in the last couple of minutes and a worldie in injury time to get Marinos over the line

J.League, man!

Bloody hell what a finish

That’s got one of the funniest/dumbest moments I think that can happen in football.

One guy haranguing the ref. Then his team mate comes up, pulls him away, and puts himself between him and the ref as if to calm him down only to unleash on the ref in the same way.

Looking at the J2 results from this weekend I noticed another club has gone for a badge change this season.

Tokushima Vortis farewell this…

and welcome this…

Better than most efforts I reckon. Those the font choice and layout of the text just feels off.

Harry Kewell tastes J1 defeat for the first time as F. Marinos go down in a bit of a surprise to Avispa Fukuoka. Mitch Duke got on for the last 15 minutes as Machida Zelvia get their first ever J1 win.

Good to see Urawa in a desirable position.

J.League Cup starts today in an interesting and complicated new format, it will involve all clubs from J1, J2 and J3 for the first time, rather than just being a J1 tournament.

There are 10 mini tournaments that make up the first round.

The winning teams move into the Playoff Round, and then the five winning teams qualify for the Prime Round, which also includes the 3 teams who qualified for ACL last year.

I’ll follow it keenly here and hope for some interesting matches and surprising cupsets along the way.

Taking a look at the matches played last night from the first round of the mini tournaments.

In Group 2, Kagoshima United (J2) defeated JEF United Chiba (J2) 1-0. (attendance 3,570). Kagoshima move on to meet Tokyo Verdy (J1) in the next round.

A thriller in Group 3, V-Varen Nagasaki (J2) defeated Ehime FC (J2) 4-3 in extra time. (attendance 1,411) A 91st minute equaliser and a 118th minute winner sends V-Varen into a meeting with Jubilo Iwata (J1).

In Group 4, it took an extra time goal to give Giravanz Kitakyushi (J3) the surprise 1-0 win over Oita Trinita (J2). (attendance 4,412). Giravanz will meet Machida Zelvia (J1) next.

It was easy going in Group 5 for Fagiano Okayama (J2), 4-1 winners over Tegevajaro Miyazaki (J3) (attendance 708). Fagiano advance to a meeting with Yokohama FC (J2).

Same scoreline but different story in Group 6, Thespa Gunma (J2) defeated SC Sagamihara (J3) 4-1, but three goals came in extra time. (attendance 1,710) This sends Gunma into a next round match against Kashiwa Reysol (J1)

In Group 7, FC Ryukyu (J3) defeated Fujieda MYFC (J2) 2-1 (attendance 881), Ryukyu will meet Gamba Osaka (J1).

Group 8 and a goal in each half for Blaublitz Akita (J2) saw them win 2-0 over Kamatamare Sanuki (J3) (attendance 689). Blaublitz go on to the next round for a match with Shonan Bellmare (J1)

In Group 9, YSCC Yokohama (J3) surprised Mito Hollyhock (J2) 1-0 (attendance 1,192), earning YSCC a match with FC Tokyo (J1).

Exciting game in Group 10, Azul Claro Numazu (J3) scored in the 94th minute to defeat Vegalta Sendai (J2) 3-2 (attendance 1,600). Azul Claro will play Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo (J1) in the next round.

The rest of the matches of round 1 will be played next Wednesday.

Machida Zelvia’s dream life in J1 continues, they beat Kashima Antlers 1-0 at home, must be one of the finest days in club history. Nagoya Grampus nightmare continues, a 3rd straight loss to open the season. A big 4-0 win for Sanfrecce Hiroshima over Sagan Tosu puts them at the top of the league which makes me very happy.

Yokohama F. Marinos vs Gamba Osaka round 2 match will take place on 10th of April, rescheduled due to F. Marinos upcoming ACL game I guess.

I haven’t checked yet and early days, but any idea how Marco Tulio is getting on at Kyoto Sanga?

Transfermarkt claims that Tulio played 80 minutes in his first game, then about 45 minutes in the next two. Not sure if they were off the bench or not.

The second match he started and was subbed off t half time, the third he was on thr bench and came on as a half time sub.

The rest of the J.League Cup first round matches tonight.

Group 1 game Kataller Toyama beat Montedio Yamagata 2-1 in extra time (attendance 1,827) to set up a meeting with Shimizu S-Pulse.

In Group 4, Vanraure Hachinohe and Zweigen Kanazawa found themselves 0-0 at the end of extra time, Hachinohe winning the penalty shootout 5-3 (attendance 719). They advance to a big game against Kashima Antlers.

In Group 5, Omiya Ardija defeated FC Gifu 2-1 (attendance 2,006) and they earn a match against Nagoya Grampus.

Match of the night was in Group 6, Matsumoto Yamaga defeated Renofa Yamaguchi 4-3 on penalties after a wild 3-3 draw with 4 goals coming in extra time. (attendance 2,919). Yamaga have a match against Avispa Fukuoka next.

In Group 7, Iwate Grulla Morioka defeated Tochigi SC 1-0, (attendance 757) sending them through to a game against Cerezo Osaka in the next round.

Group 8 saw Iwaki FC win over FC Osaka 2-0 with two second half goals (attendance 1,980). They go on to meet Albirex Niigata.

Group 9 Roasso Kumamoto defeated Fukushima United 2-1 (attendance 690) and will advance to a match against Sagan Tosu.

The biggest win of the round was in Group 10, AC Nagano Parceiro squashed Tokushima Vortis 5-1, the misery of the season continues for Vortis. (attendance 2,248), Nanago will play Kyoto Sanga next.

The competition started with 60 teams, at the end of the first round in the mini tournaments, 17 teams have said farewell.

43 teams still have the lights on and the hope for the silverware. April 16th and 24th is the next round for the mini tournament stage.

The J.League from the weekend

Nagoya Grampus are finally able to get a win, and Mitch Langerak a clean sheet, as they finished with a 2-0 win away at Kashiwa Reysol. Machida Zelvia won again, putting them in sole 1st place on the J1 table after 4 rounds. Not even the most passionate Zelvia fan could have imagined that at any time of the season. Mitch Duke got on for the last 15 minutes. Craziest game of the round was surely Shonan Bellmare and Urawa Reds 4-4 draw.

It was a 96th minute own goal that sealed the win for Tokushima Vortis against Mito Hollyhock, but they won’t care, a first win of the season is welcome however it comes. A rough start to the game for Roasso Kumamoto turned into a second half murder when Iwaki FC scored four times in the second half to make basashi out of Kumamoto.

I always like to keep an eye on teams that start a season unbeaten, and teams that start winless, and which team goes the longest for each.

Currently in the undefeated through the 3 leagues we have
FC Machida Zelvia, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Cerezo Osaka, Gamba Osaka, Fagiano Okayama, Vegalta Sendai, FC Imabari, FC Osaka, Omiya Ardija, SC Sagamihara, FC Ryukyu

And in the winless section
Tokyo Verdy, Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo, Thespa Gunma, Fujieda MYFC, Kamatamare Sanuki, AC Nagano Parceiro, Kataller Toyama, Iwate Grulla Morioka, Nara Club, YSCC Yokohama, Giravanz Kitakyushu, Tegevajaro Miyazaki.

Which team will be the longest running unbeaten? And who will be the most hapless loser in the end?
