J.League 2024 and beyond

Woo hoo. There looks to be something really wrong with Sapporo this season.

I was sure I had written up the results and tables for last weekend  It seems I had put it in my notepad document but not actually posted it.

I’ll write up this weekend’s action this afternoon and then we’ll be all good.

The race for longest unbeaten and longest winless streaks to open the season are getting close to a conclusion.

Cerezo Osaka with 5 wins and 3 draws from their first 8 games, Sanfrecce Hiroshima with 4 wins and 4 draws from their first 8 games, and Omiya Ardija in J3 with 6 wins and 3 draws from their 9 games are the last three teams across the J.Leagues yet to taste the pain of defeat.

The race to the bottom is now over. Kamatamare Sanuki have played 9 games for 6 draws and only 3 losses, but are the sole remaining team across the three leagues who have not celebrated a league win this season. Congratulations losers.

Looks like Harry is starting to do ok with Yokohama, hopefully he keeps moving up the table

F. Marinos got a couple of wins in the last few weeks but copped an 80th minute equaliser against Bellmare on the weekend.

They have a Champions League game tonight so they get the weekend off, their match for the round has been rescheduled for next month.

Either way, fuck 'em! I hope they lose 20 games in a row.

Last weekend J.League rounds, let’s have a look at what went down across the three divisions.

I have never cared for Kashima Antlers after realising they have so many fans who are pricks, so it was satisfying seeing them get smacked 4-2 by Sagan Tosu. It was almost as pleasing as seeing Urawa Reds lose 1-0 to Gamba Osaka. Vissel Kobe took until the 93rd minute to find a single goal against Shonan Bellmare. The FC Machida Zelvia dream continues, they beat FC Tokyo in a derby to get their 6th win in their first 9 J1 games. Mitch Duke came on as a sub and played the last 20 minutes.

Cerezo Osaka tasted their first loss, leaving Sanfrecce Hiroshima the last remaining unbeaten team in J1.

Aussie Ben Duncan scored a late consolation goal for Ehime FC, the second goal of the season for the former Central Coast Mariners academy man. It was a real nut-punch of a result for JEF United Chiba, losing 2-1 to Blaublitz Akita was bad enough, but the Blaublitz goals came as a 90th minute equaliser and a 97th minute winner for the away team.

It feels somehow appropriate that a player called Matheus Jesus plays for V-Varen Nagasaki, the team based in the area of Japan where Christianity originally spread into the country, and he was the saviour indeed scoring a brace as Nagasaki overcame Thespa Gunma.

Ouch.

It’s really not a great time to be a Grulla fan that’s for sure.

So currently just finalising plans for a Japan/Korea trip in Sept/October. The whole point is this time around i’m just avoiding Tokyo completely (aside from seeing the sumo at Ryogoku…). So naturally i’ve decided to make sure i’m in a town that has a J-league team every weekend. Barring any re-scheduling of fixtures i’ve currently got:

Albirex Niigata vs Shonan Bellmare
FC Osaka vs Fukushima United
Sagan Tosu vs Avispa Fukoka

On top of this is wherever Sydney are playing in those first 3 match days in the ACL2. On paper, very cool.

The J3 game should be a great experience! How good.

It escaped me last week that there was a round of J.League Cup matches played and absolutely delivered! Some great cupsets that we all love.

Group 1 saw J3 Kataller Toyama eliminated J2 leaders Shimizu S-Pulse 6-5 on penalties after a 0-0 draw (att: 3,257)

No such upset in Group 2, Sanfrecce Hiroshima (J1) ran out 6-0 winners over Nara Club (J3) (att: 2,818)

Group 3 saw a similar easy win for the favourite, J1 Urawa Red Diamonds beating J3 Gainare Tottori 5-2 (att: 7,677)

Group 5 was a battle of two J2 teams, Yokohama FC defeating Fagiano Okayama 5-3 on penalties after a thriller 3-3 draw (att: 2,827)

Group 6 was straightforward for J1 Kashiwa Reysol, 3-1 winners over J2 strugglers Thespa Gunma (att: 1,950)

Group 7 was the biggest cupset of the round, FC Ryukyu (J3) beating Gamba Osaka (J1) 2-1 (att: 5,406)

Group 8 had another upset when J2 Blaublitz Akita beat J1 Shonan Bellmare 2-1 in extra time. (att: 1,335)

Group 9 was a win for Sagan Tosu (J1), 1-0 over Roasso Kumamoto (att: 4,210)

Moving into the final round of the Group stage, we have:

Tokyo Verdy vs Sanfrecce Hiroshima
V-Varen Nagasaki vs Urawa Red Diamonds
FC Machida Zelvia vs Kashima Antlers
Yokohama FC vs Nagoya Grampus
Kashiwa Reysol vs Avispa Fukuoka
FC Ryukyu vs Cerezo Osaka
Blaublitz Akita vs Albirex Niigata
Sagan Tosu vs FC Tokyo
AC Nagano Parceiro vs Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo

At the end of this round we will be down to 10 teams. These teams will advance into the Playoff stage, a two-legged elimination round.

The five winning teams in the Playoff stage advance into the Prime Stage, to be joined by the 3 ACL competing clubs this year Kawasaki Frontale, Yokohama F. Marinos and Ventforet Kofu making up the final eight of the cup.

Harry and his Yokohama side are playing atm against Iwata. 2pm Tokyo time on a Friday which is a weird time. Big crowd for a work day but I’m watching it while “working” from home so no judgement from me

Thanks for the tip, now I have something for the 2nd screen.

Outlook on one, J-League in the middle and football manager on the 3rd. Productive Friday.

It’s Golden Week in Japan so it’s a holiday

It was indeed a Golden week for some clubs last weekend across the J.Leagues! A couple of rounds squished in during the holiday time meant some hard work, games played the 3rd and 6th of May.

Another late goal saw F. Marinos drop points in a 1-1 draw with Jubilo Iwata. It was a really late goal that grabbed a point for Albirex Niigata, a 94th minute equaliser after playing an hour with 10 men against Sanfrecce Hiroshima. When does FC Machida Zelvia’s miracle start to the season start to become a miracle dream? Another win, 2-0 at home to Kashiwa Reysol has the new boys flying incredibly high at the top of the league. Mitch Duke continues to be a bit-part player, came on in the 80th minute. As usual, Mitch Langerak was the main man in goal for Nagoya Grampus.

Yokohama F. Marinos 1-1 Jubilo Iwata (38,945)

Kawasaki Frontale 3-1 Urawa Red Diamonds (23,457)
Avispa Fukuoka 1-0 Gamba Osaka (10,791)
Nagoya Grampus 0-2 Vissel Kobe (38,955)

In the 12th round of matches, it was more wild scenes with late goals, Tokyo Verdy banging a 99th minute winner in a 3-2 thrill ride against Jubilo Iwata. FC Machida Zelvia continue their winning ways, a 3-0 rolling of Kyoto Sanga. Mitch Duke actually came on at the 60th minute and enjoyed his 30 minute spell, scoring the 3rd Zelvia goal. His first goal in the J1 season for Zelvia. The final holdout undefeated team in J1, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, finally fell, going down 3-2 to Langerak and Nagoya Grampus. It was an own goal in the 84th minute that saw the purple reign end.
