Had a job interview pull me up about a spelling mistake on my resume after talking about attention to detail.

I pointed out a spelling mistake on their job ad in response.

I didn’t get the job.

Just did a phone interview with someone and cut it off after 2 minutes. The role we’re looking at is for someone experienced in running an instrument to analyse elemental metals. The resume looked promising but the applicant obviously had zero experience or even actual knowledge on the instrument. It really does amaze me when people try to add really really technical skills when they have none.

Not “advice”, but I have had a full-time job for three months now and am officially Centrelink-free. Soooo… socioeconomic jokes about the Wanderers? :face_with_monocle:

Just got the absolute weirdest response from someone that applied for our role. So we’ve reached out and hired an individual, so sent out an email to all applicants letting them know they were unsuccessful. One guy who we didn’t interview responded:

He was surprised and disappointed that, despite the huge amount of experience the candidate had. He went on by linking his google scholar account, showing how much research he had done and how “well known” he was in the scientific community. He then asked us to look at his resume again and reconsider, indicating that he would be happy to pass on references from all the “famous and well known scientists” that know his work.

The crux of the matter: we advertised for someone that worked on a specific instrument, he didn’t have an experience on that specific instrument… I’ve never seen a response from someone that “aggressive” from a rejection email.

Had a hectic email exchange with a candidate on Monday also. First choice for the role asked for a bit more than we were willing to pay, given they didn’t have the desired experience and would’ve taken considerable training to get up to speed, thought we made a fair offer with the proviso that pays are reviewed at the end of each calendar year (so, get up to speed and you’ll likely be on what you’re asking for in six months time). No dice, fair enough, they just dragged out the decision not to accept a little longer than necessary but we all move on.

On to second choice, this rooster provisionally accepted the offer by email prior to the long weekend, but then delayed returning the formal offer & acceptance document (part of employment contract) for a week. There were more red flags than a CCP convention prior to this, but he did have some niche experience so my boss overlooked them and was willing to give him a shot. After a polite enough follow up so we could conclude the process he decides Monday to try and negotiate the salary, despite having agreed to it ~10 days earlier (when such discussion was appropriate and would have been entered into).

I had the joy of replying to that, withdrawing the offer and wishing him well (as much it’s tempting to tell him to GGF you’ve got to keep it professional). The very second I hit send I see another email from him come through, it’s the contract / formal acceptance that has crossed over simultaneously. :joy: He’s gone from withholding its return and saying he’ll send the signed document back after salary negotiations are complete, to just sending it through anyways having edited the start date to yesterday (next business day, when start date was yet to be agreed) an hour later.

Like, was he trying to be a boss, just didn’t hold his nerve and shat the bed within an hour? We were running a book on whether he’d just turn up anyways, Costanza style.

So am in the process of looking for a new job.

In short, the team I am in is being run horribly, morale is rock bottom and we’re all sick of our managers micro management style into our role, when she has no idea what our role really entails. The upper management team are also making more and more hoops for us to jump through that don’t benefit us overall, to get the exact same work done. As such, to do the same job takes longer and is more finicky. We’re a team of 6, one has already put in their 4 weeks, and my TL isn’t far off either. Currently got a couple of interviews lined up for later this week. I’m also hoping for a role closer to home so I can spend more time with the kids and make it easier for the wife (separated or not). Currently I’m travelling 25kms each way for work, but on average it takes over an hour each way. I’m leaving pretty much on the dot 7am so I can get to work by 8.30am, and I don’t get home until after 6. New role could be in Moorebank which is 15 minutes up the road from me. I’ll be taking a paycut, but won’t be a) travelling on the M5 and surrounding clogged arterials, b)paying $0 in tolls, and c)paying significantly less in monthly petrol. It’s close enough that I could even cycle too/from work.

That aside, due to our work load being incredibly low at the moment, I’ve been assigned to help our collections team with some debt recovery. It’s not a fun job, whilst I am working with debt collectors, I’m trying to structure customers loans to make repayments a little easier, if it’s able to be done. It can be a bit rewarding especially when you hear the relief in the customers voice that I’m not contacting them that we’re going to take their car, but it’s still pretty sucky at times, and you do get people wanting to just unload on you over the phone, getting vague threats etc.

Part of my role is to send out SMS reminders to customers. It’s the easiest aspect of the role, it’s an sms template and you send it out in bulk. This morning (even though you’re not supposed to reply back to them – people do), I get this reply to a message from our collections team who are in the process of debt collecting the vehicle: “I’m broke & suicidal. Do whatever you fucking want”.

I have no idea how to respond to that. I asked my TL who said there’s nothing we can do. I expect a bit of aggro from customers in this role – collections is never the nice guy – but for somebody to reply back they’re suicidal – I’m not trained for that. Kinda bumming me out that if they does go through with it, it could have been our message that made them do it.

It’s not a nice way to start a Monday, that’s for certain.

That’s a completely fucked up situation. I would have thought there’d be some sort of policy in place to deal with situations like these. You ultimately don’t want to be involved in a situation where someone is threatening to commit suicide, at the very least, flagging it and sending the message to the police would be a fairly easy thing to do.

Yeah I feel like as a company providing finance on something, you’d have a process in place for when customers threaten shit like that. Wild.

Well they should, I work in insurance and all finance service companies should have a vulnerable customer policy.

100%. I know it’s debt recovery and I assume there’s a lot of that in the industry but I just can’t fathom not having a protocol for this at all. It screams of negligence to your staff and the ‘customers’

So my team has been going downhill severely in terms of morale for about a year now.

Our manager is the most micromanaging people you will ever meet, and everything has to be her way or the highway.

Since I started here over 2.5 years ago we’ve had 6 people leave; and all have stated her as the reason. She also changes the way we work on a whim.

Doesn’t help that despite being our manager she’s also in the Project Team and has been rolling out several new projects over the last year which basically leaves her completely unavailable as a manager, forcing that responsibility to our team leader, whilst dragging him into the project space as well.

Morale in the team has been at rock bottom for months, and she’s stopped allowing us to work from home (except her teachers pets…).

With me going through this divorce as well, I’ve completely lost all my enjoyment for the role.

So I’ve been hunting, and got a gig at an automotive yard that runs like 20 dealerships across NSW.

Put my 4 weeks in today. Rumour has it my TL is going to do the same in the next month or so.

It’s a bit of a step down in terms of pay and responsibility, as its a customer service based role, but less stress in my life right now isn’t a bad thing. Its also only 20 minutes each way from home, against traffic. No more M5 rage, and taking an hour to go 25kms…

Feels good.

She’s not a bad person, per se, and we normally get along alright. But yeah, working under her is just a nightmare at times, and honestly with me not being happy in the role has probably contributed to home life in the last few months before the missus walked out.

Sounds very familiar to my previous role. Except it was a small business, and I was the one person working on the project on a technical level, so for a long time it was a serious case of FOBY. The fact I got so far with what I was asked to work on was a miracle in itself.

Reasons to stay in the ADF keep getting smaller and smaller. Not really interested in sticking around to get treated poorly and there really being no benefits anymore.

Looking into whether I can medically discharge and trying to figure out the whole DVA system is a nightmare though.

My brother was in the Airfield Defence Guards and during a training he dislocated and broke his shoulder in the first year of his 4/5 year stint. Wasn’t able to do his job at all after that, so they moved him into some admin role and wouldn’t let him medically discharge and had to see his contract up. He spend ages trying to get out of it, but couldn’t. Hopefully you’ll have better luck.
