The thing is that these things are done with a very wide net and pray on very much the most vulnerable and the least educated. 99% of people won’t fall for their tricks, but there’s enough that do. It’s not that different from people that get caught up in drugs, mortgages they can’t pay for etc. It’s about educating these people and protecting the ones that can’t do so.
I’ve been caught out once even at work. They spoofed an email account from one of our employees and made it look 100% legit, which was scary. Thankfully I never input my password once I clicked the link, but it was ridiculously real
I use both NAB and ANZ banks and anytime I’ve done large transfer from both there are a lot of questions from the bank asking about the transactions legitimacy. 25k for a second car and the bank asked if I had mechanic look at the car, if I cross referenced the price on red book, if I have checked the car isn’t owed money on finance. On a house deposit and esentially our life savings, they ask you to double, triple and quadruple check the details at an annoying level. I dont know what more the banks could have done to protect me. If any of those transactions had gone bad, I’d have to say it’d been on me.
Whereas had the complete opposite with Commbank. Had an elderly relative scammed.
Scammers managed to access their internet banking.
Cleared out 3 x accounts totaling more than 80k in a couple of transactions. Also managed to transfer entire credit card limit into one account before emptying it.
Completely against typical spending habits and not flagged by the bank at any point.
Eventually reimbursed by the bank after around 18months of arguments and involving AFCA to put pressure on them.
Agree obviously that the fault sits with the relative, but surely all banks should have some things in place to try and prevent it happening
I’ve had HSBC call me about things as little as a minor transaction in another state (which was me), a repeated international transaction online (which was only $45 each time, I just ordered wrong quantity and went straight back in and ordered the same thing again, and <6000 sent to someone I hadn’t transferred to before and that they thought was suss, all within 10 minutes of them happening. And each time they said they had immediately held the transactions and wouldn’t process them until I confirmed. I thought it was impressive enough and wasn’t at all worried about having to do it
I had Macquarie lock my accounts while in Italy trying to pay for street parking via an app because the payment was routed through Spain, and I hadn’t told them I was going to be in Spain.
Was an absolute pain to get my account back up and running due to driving through an area with zero reception several hours later, but the system at least worked.
How was this not a Frontline bit?
She’s got some stamina! She even holds the mic up while talking while running.
What are the mobile camera units like these days? Camera man moving well too.
Sign her up!
She’s wearing joggers. Was she expecting it?
Elon Musk is taking The Global Alliance for Responsible Media to court, claiming damages as they’re refusing to advertise on X… He’s claiming they’re doing it as a way to harm X rather than the fact that they’re just not wanting to associate with his brand… He’s claiming they’re standards and guidelines are on par if not better than competitors, although it doesn’t take a genius to see how subjectively his “standards” are being applied to users. The Global Alliance for Responsible Media includes companies like Mars, Amex, Adidas, BP, etc. It’s got huge names behind it. Worst case scenario, the brands individually decide to not advertise with him, rather than as an organisations. He’s not going to sue some hundred major brands and force them to give him money…
It’s amazing what a thick fucker he turns out to be when he can’t just get competent engineers to solve his problems.
Proof that money doesn’t buy commonsense.
he’s just a little kid that wants his cake and eat it too… He’s just complaining people aren’t giving him money
He told them all to get fucked in an interview didn’t he?
Then giggled to himself about how cool he was.
He’s always been a fuckwit, just hiding it less and less now. His trans daughter has been absolutely ripping him to shreds on the socials, despite the genetic disadvantage of being his spawn she’s an absolute legend.
He’s acting like a manchild, emphasis on child
And the problem is, I’ve got a friend who is a stan. Can’t point out how crap is as they get very upset.
Who cares what his personality is like? No one in this thread will ever know him personally or even be in the same room. Judge him on how he uses his outrageous wealth to contribute to society. On that count, I’d say he’s right up there.
Even a Mongolian or a German contributed to society. Why not a South African?!
Sure, let’s do it. Let’s start by talking about his buy-out of Twitter and his encouragement of far right ideology on that site.
