Newcastle Jets: rap battles pending

Scott Morrison?

Big news out of Newcastle:

Particularly interesting that existing players will be offered a new contract, which may see some players (i.e. Ugarkovic) leave.

Ugarkovic confirmed moving to WSW next season.

The new league organisation didn’t waste any time

Carl Robinson climbs up the moral high ground.

Remember listening to him on the Shim, spider, moore podcast saying people would understand once eventually news of the Jets was made public.

“A new licence will be issued to an entity owned and controlled by a consortium of existing APL club investors.”

Does this mean all 11 clubs or some of the clubs?

Seems like it’s us, WSW, WU doing this one.

According to their release it sounds like we’re one of the main ones involved

“The Newcastle Jets have today secured their future in the A-League and Westfield W-League competitions after the Licence was granted to a consortium of APL clubs, led by Sydney FC, Western United FC and Western Sydney Wanderers.”

This is pretty awkward really. It would be best if it was evenly spread across all other sides, but it’s understandable if most don’t have spare cash sloshing around in the current environment.

What’s Con doing these days?

Is it not pretty similar to the MLS did when they had problems. Didnt one owner own like half the leagues clubs or something along those lines.

I dont think an even split and burdening Charlesworth with more would be a good way to go

The MLS had a foundation through the tough years with 2 (I think) owners of most clubs. Don’t mind it but its interesting. Presumably we will batter them 10-0 otherwise they don’t get paid that month.

Assuming they can shift it quickly it’s a pretty good short term investment - say they put $1m into running it for X months and going rate of a license is $5-15m. Wonder what the deal is there.

WU being involved (supposedly skint) and Victory and City (supposedly loaded) not being involved is very, very interesting to me.

Maybe NSW as the common connection there? Does seem odd otherwise.

City are only really interested in CFG so that kind of makes sense. Victory is interesting because they are supposed to be profitable so not sure why they wouldn’t be keen - feels like a pretty decent investment if there were buyers out there recently.

Melbourne are owned by a consortium though right? Probably makes it hard to get the money together rather than Uncle Traktor just putting the cash up straight away on his own.

Ok, so this paints it in a different way.

“Mattiske stressed that the consortium in place should not be seen merely as “interim owners” but businesspeople who have made a serious commitment towards the club and the region.”

I like the part where the old entity has to shoulder all of the debts the club has run up. The consortium can start with a fresh slate. Not sure how much the old owner will like this though

It’s a warning to other owners who are dragging out a sale and considering starving their clubs in the meantime

Mattiske was in the world game Facebook live/podcast today if anyone is interested.

An announcement on their coach is expected today with either Craig Deans or Kenny “good fucking bloke” Lowe the contenders.
