Qatar 2022: A slave to Blatter

Sorry I meant away goals

lol that is way to funny. I wouldn’t want to be the person to tell them

The lasers in Salahs eyes were an absolute disgrace

No idea how he is meant to take a penalty

Needs to become a mainstay of the Australian football lexicon.

The return of The Ray of Light?

Kiwis advance to the playoff, almost certainly against Costa Rica.

I had forgotten entirely that they played Peru for the 2018 world cup. Drawing 0 all at home and losing 2 0 away to a much better Peruvian side than the current one.

Caught me by surprise that the draw for the World Cup itself is happening tomorrow (I think 3am Saturday AEDT)

Apparently (according to some guy on Twitter) the pots will be:

Pot 1 - Qatar, Brazil, Belgium, France, Argentina, England, Spain, Portugal
Pot 2 - Netherlands, Germany, Mexico, USA, Denmark, Switzerland, Croatia, Uruguay
Pot 3 - Senegal, Iran, Japan, Morocco, Serbia, Poland, Sth Korea, Tunisia
Pot 4 - Canada, Cameroon, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, Ghana, [Scotland/Ukraine/Wales], [Australia / UAE / Peru], [Costa Rica / New Zealand]

Every group will have at least one UEFA team, with five groups having two. Other than UEFA, no two teams from the same confederation in a group.

Does that mean Australia can’t face any South American teams (if we make it) as they have to plan for the possibility that Peru win the play-off?

According to the same guy on Twitter, yes, you’re right.

I’m always impressed how they come up with a procedure to enforce the confederation rule (+ any other weird rules)
and still always end up with Ghana & USA in the same group (nvm I forgot 2010 they met in the knockouts).

It’s a derby?

I predict that if we make it, we’ll draw Brazil, Germany and Senegal.

I would have picked France, Germany and Serbia as the ultimate group of death from those pots but, from the perspective of the Australian team, every group will be a group of death if we manage to get through.

Nailed on to draw the same group as England, and then get knocked out by UAE or Peru and not qualify.

or for me it would be Portugal and then Australia not making it.

I thought Portugal made it?

Scotland have ended up with the shitty end of the stick despite a decent qualification campaign.

Drawn against Ukraine, to be played in June, with the entirety of the world bar Russia, Belarus and maybe China, supporting Ukraine, or not played and a bye into a game against a Welsh team that lost only one qualifier against Belgium and who haven’t been to a world cup since 1958.

Hard to see us making it, which would fortunately let me avoid a conflict of interest in boycotting the slave state world cup.

I mean Portugal and Australia being drawn in the same group and then Australia not making it. Pretty sure they’ve never played against each other at senior level.

Yeah I was thinking that getting Qatar is what we’d want, but they beat us anyway and I’d rather lose to someone else than that mob. Well apart from maybe England.

Assuming we can’t draw an Asian team?

Yeah, sounds like we can’t get Asia or Sth America. So from our the winner of our playoff’s POV:

Pot 1 - Qatar, Brazil, Belgium, France, Argentina, England, Spain, Portugal
Pot 2 - Netherlands, Germany, Mexico, USA, Denmark, Switzerland, Croatia, Uruguay
Pot 3 - Senegal, Iran, Japan, Morocco, Serbia, Poland, Sth Korea, Tunisia
Pot 4 - Canada, Cameroon, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, Ghana, [Scotland/Ukraine/Wales], [Australia / UAE / Peru], [Costa Rica / New Zealand]

Guaranteed a European team from Pot 1 means that we can’t get UEFA teams from both Pots 2 & 3, so the only possibilities are:

[Belgium / France / England / Spain / Portugal] +

  • [Netherlands / Germany / Denmark / Switzerland / Croatia] + [Senegal / Morocco / Tunisia]; or
  • [Mexico / USA] + [Senegal / Morocco / Tunisia / Serbia / Poland]

I dunno if any of those combinations are more likely than the others
the UEFA restrictions + undecided qualifiers makes it complicated.
