My theory is that he instilled a culture of working 110% for the jersey into that club top to bottom so that even when they weren’t the best team on the park, they were always in with a chance of just muddling through by sheer force of will. That was particularly the case in (many) big games and why they were often such a threat in the finals. It isn’t that he was any sort of tactical mastermind (he was as inflexible as they came in many cases), just a really strong man motivator.
Now with him out, the only one there who really has been a part of that culture for such a long time is Broxham, and he’s just not as forceful a character as Muscat was.
