Buhagiar is the only one (now that Brosque is too old for that kind of thing) who can make runs past the line and give a different kind of passing option (including for De Jong, DDS etc), and also give opposition defenses a different kind of worry, which in turn helps free up a bit of space for the passers behind.
Our issues are in large part due to two players missing though.
It’s clear from pre-season that Buhagiar was intended to play a larger role than just a bench player. I suspect Brosque would’ve been playing 15-30 minutes against tired defences with a much faster Buhagiar taking them on early in the match.
That alone hasn’t sunk us, but that plus de Jong is clearly a big loss. I actually think we’re doing pretty well having lost what looked to be a first choice striker plus one of our marquees.
I agree and disagree. Biggest problem is injuries to De Jong and Buhagiar at the same time, which mean that Brosque is required on the pitch for full games, rather than being the super sub as was suggested the plan was at the start of the season. You can’t deny that the moment we lost the two, we’ve looked decidedly less deadly in attack. Buhagiar especially was having a ripper of a start for us. Everyone knew from his time at CCM that he had the skill and the agility, it was only the lack of goals that were holding him back. In that, it looked like he’d found his goal scoring boots in our pre-season.
The big benefit of having Buhagiar in the team was that (even when he was not personally creating anything) the opposition defenders had to sit a little deeper because of his pace and this created extra space in our mid-field. That he was also scoring goals on the counter or assisting ALF was just icing on the cake.
Yeah this is the key point.
Also DDS isn’t the kind of player to do that, Brosque is past being able to do this effectively and Alf lacks someone being forward near him.
I can’t really base my theories on a new, young player’s handful of good performances, against state league opposition, in pre-season while disregarding the whole rest of his career.
Even if Brosque was destined for the bench, with front four of Alf, Ninko, DeJong and DDS fit and firing? then Brosque is on the bench…
Maybe that is the case, but I find that a little harsh. If you were the manager and looked at our bench on the weekend who would you have put on? Those big injuries to Buhagiar, De Jong and a little with DDS has really impacted our depth. I reckon if we were full strength, Corica would be bringing on Brosque, Danny De Silva and Retre on to try and change the game. However at the moment he’s probably thinking his best options are on the field
