Semi Final leg 2: Melbourne City vs Sydney FC - 7.45pm 19/5/2023

As Simo said below, it’s on BT sport, just a matter of finding a pub with BT sport that will open at 10:30 on Friday morning. A lot of the pubs open at that time don’t have BT (your wetherspoons etc). Belushi’s around the city open at 11 and will put it on for you, watched a few finals in them before.

There will be local pubs around that open early, so I would just check google maps around where you are. The Green Man on Essex Road near me opens at 10am and has BT.

It seems people are talking about everything BUT this game?

48 hours until FT whistle.

When we last won a title, the dominant strain of COVID was the freakin original strain. It’s been that long.

Let’s win the next two games farken.

People being jinx-avoiders?

We’re a pretty tasty $3.60 for the 90 min win, $2.60 to win the tie in any manner.

Both teams paying $13:00 to progress on pens, betting on both wouldn’t be entirely crazy

I think the Euston Flyer, just round the corner from where I am staying, will be open at !0, has BT Sports and does a breakfast menu.

Football is boring.

Sydney 3-2.

More goals need to be kicked for soccer to be interesting.

Maybe wider goals and no goalie?

We should just make goals worth 6 points and hell why not give them a point for having a crack as well

One of the odder points I have heard from mulitple pundits this week is that Maclaren had 13 touches in the first game with no shots on goal, but that won’t happen again because all he needs is one touch to score*… but he had 13 and didn’t score, so clearly - that bollocks isn’t right.

Anyway - I trust that Rodwell and Wilko have the experience to keep Maclaren quite like they did in that first game - from there, I truly believe that player for player, they are no better than us and tactically since Rado has arrived, they have been conceding a decent amount of goals. IF we can get our preferred front three on with no injury concerns, we might just be able to bump City off…

I mean that’s generally how shooting works. If he’s shooting with both feet, then i’d be questioning if he isn’t a certain Colombian goalkeeper

If we get past City I can see us winning it all, really being the villain to ruin the Mariners fairytale. The Sydney conspiracy will be through the roof.

City had 5/8 shots on target last week compared to our 7/13.

First shot on target was the goal. Their next shot came 10 minutes later and was a dribbler of an effort where it should have been 2-0. Took them another 20 minutes to get another shot on target (Bos’ effort). Mid range header was next which was easily saved (another 20 or so minutes later), then Naboot from well outside the box without any venom on it at all.

For all the possession they had (60%+) they didn’t really threaten too much and we really kept them in the middle third of the park quite well without being stretched too often. We actually had the better attacking chances with the minimal ball we had (nearly double the shots inside the box too).

I just hope they don’t turn it up a notch or two and absolutely blitz us.

They’re at home. I would be surprised if they didn’t turn it up and would say they actually played a little conservatively last week.

Would be pretty amazing really. Fingers crossed

They were dangerous from set pieces. The goal, Good hitting the bar, and even Tilio had a free header in the second half. Outside of that, we handled them well.
I feel like they had more speed around the pitch, but our defensive shape (which was basically 442 for most of the game) held solid.
Fancy us to get a result down there tbh. Alf fluffed his touch a couple of times and we had the two offsides, so we weren’t far off a real statement win.

This is the big one for me - we managed to get it in the back of the net three times, with plenty more chances. They didn’t look anywhere near as dangerous.

Two to tango and all that… we were atrocious defending them too. Weird, because I agree we completely contained them otherwise. It really is delicately balanced. Looking forward to it!

We’re notoriously slow starting games in general. We’re very much a second half team and have been for as long as I can remember.

We need to start strongly, and can’t allow $ity to dictate terms early on. We don’t want to be chasing the game, no matter how strong our second half may be. If we can stay onside, and score first, it’ll allow us to exploit space that opens up in their midfield, allowing Mak and Burgess to do their thing freely.

City are going to be wanting to go hard early on and get a quick goal. We cannot allow them to do that.

It’s only fair, gives some encouragement to the less talented. Maybe tell the keeper to have a break too?

They hit the bar from a second corner. I was wincing every time they got a corner, really close a few times
