Squad speculation thread 2020/21

The club article released when he left in October advised he would be on loan: Sydney FC Agree To Le Fondre Loan | Sydney FC

“Sydney FC have agreed to loan striker Adam Le Fondre to an overseas club after the frontman received a lucrative offer to play out the remaining year of his contract.”

“The Sky Blues will receive a loan fee for the striker and hope to be able to conclude a deal for a replacement shortly.”

Trying to find a clear answer to this is hurting my brain. I’m very close to just asking Le Fondre himself

Oh I had the domestic transfer rules in mind, like how we took DDS in 2018-19, or if we hypothetically loaned out one of the kids.

It seemed pretty clear from the announcement that ALF’s loan out is a salary cap dump. Almost certain that we are not taking his salary in the cap, which allowed us to retain everyone else (without needing to convince everybody to take a 30% cut).

We definitely would not be able to get a replacement in the cap if we were keeping him on.

On the Sky Blue Stories Podcast the man said the loan is till the end of May 2021 but out of contract past then.

I’ve been advised by a definitive authority that:

In the event a player was loaned overseas by an A-League club any amount paid by the A-League club to the player would count towards the salary cap. In the event there were no payments obviously there would be no salary cap impact.

If I’m following correctly, anything Sydney FC pay Le Fondre over the course of the 20/21 season will count towards the A-League salary cap. That amount could be very small or very large, depending on how the loan agreement between Sydney FC and Mumbai City FC defines which club will pay what percentage of his player salary.

Sydney FC communicated that they received a loan fee for Le Fondre, but I can’t find any public confirmation of how his wages will be paid for the upcoming season.

I have read media articles and tweets from people who would know that indicate that his loan would get Le Fondre’s wages out of Sydney FC’s salary cap, and any replacement striker would be paid for using the salary cap (reduced ~30% for this season).

I’m thinking it’s likely that:

  • Mumbai are paying most or all of Le Fondre’s salary until the end of May, and Le Fondre will have minor or no impact on Sydney FC’s salary cap this season (even though the A-League season concludes end of June)
  • Most or all of what Sydney FC are saving on not having to pay for Le Fondre will be devoted to maintaining the salaries of players in the current squad as best as possible
  • Sydney’s cap management will likely utilise the available salary cap exemptions (homegrown, loyalty, and scholarship) to great effect, but I don’t know that there would be any notable change here on last season, so likely no additional cap freed up
  • Sydney’s two designated players for 20/21 are likely two of Ninkovic, Barbarouses, or Baumjohann
  • A replacement striker could be one of Sydney’s designated players, but this means that Sydney would need to fit two of Ninkovic, Barbarouses, and Baumjohann in the salary cap

bobo on a short term contract until Alfie finishes his cash grab in Mumbai

Its our own fault we are in this position though. If we were wiser about the contracts given to ABJ and Kosta we’d have more coin to play with to get a better/younger striker.

We all have to agree AT THE TIME, Kosta was a great signing, just hasn’t made the headlines since.

ABJ, any of our midfielders could have done the job the same. Be it Bimbis tactics at play i guess to where he has had to play for us. BMJ probably would be best suited to central AM or something.

Was interesting to hear Le Fondre’s opinion of Kosta though. He said basically that Kosta has the speed and plays well for a striker partner to feed the poacher type. Hopefully, Buhagiar and Kosta can build on what they already have. Lot’s of speed up front on the right hand side.

Regarding Kosta and ABJ’s contracts, I was wondering once the cap was confirmed as reduced for this season, how much room did A-League clubs have to renegotiate individual player contracts?

I wouldn’t have thought it could have been possible to maintain all player contracts in their current form, as logic says to me that the ~30% cap reduction would have meant the club was overcommitted in terms of wages.

SMH in October covering the new collective bargaining agreement between PFA and the clubs reported:

If the agreement is ratified, it will ensure all individual A-League player contracts remain valid with many previously at risk of being deemed invalid in the absence of a CBA.

The threat of a CBA not being reached appeared likely when the A-League clubs began negotiating pay reductions directly with the players, with Perth Glory going so far as to side-step the union. Perth chairman Tony Sage had previously described the PFA as “irrelevant”, suggesting the clubs would sideline the union as they sought to reduce their wage bill.

Clubs have been able to sign the core of their players on reduced wages for next season, with the salary cap set to be slashed from $3.2 million per season down to $2.1 million. Clubs that didn’t spend the full salary cap for last season will also be given up to $200,000 extra to spend on this season’s salary cap if they choose to.

Which doesn’t really clear up for me what clubs could do and what they did do regarding player contracts.

  • Were Sydney allowed to offer Kosta and ABJ new contracts with significantly reduced salaries?
  • Were clubs even still beholden to the current player contracts knowing that they most likely couldn’t pay them any more without breaching the new salary cap?
  • Where did clubs have room to move in terms of managing old contracts for the new season
  • What specifically did the PFA and the CBA protect?

Yeah, Kosta was scoring some tidy goals in the season prior to him being signed. ABJ was looking good in a terrible Wanderers side too, although I think in his case it was simply an opportunistic signing - he was all set to head home with no other offers on the table so we were able to snag him for lower than he would have liked. On paper, he was a good fit in Bimbi’s “two number 10’s” system. I recall being pretty pleased with those two signings, not super excited, but it felt like the club had done some tidy business.

The agreement between clubs and PFA was basically that clubs could offer players a %-decrease on their existing contracts (with some agreed maximum, I think), and that players would have the option of accepting (or negotiating) or walking away from the contract.

That is:

  • players were unable to insist that they remain on their existing wages for the duration of their current contract
  • clubs were unable to force players to accept a decrease

We received no information about specifically what was offered to our players, individually or collectively, only that Sydney FC & Players Reach Agreement In Pay Deal Neegotiations the day after the terms of the Clubs/PFA deal was finalised.

Redmayne, Wilkinson, Zullo go from 12.5% loyalty allowance to 25% allowance. Warland and Retre hit 12.5% loyalty allowance. Wouldn’t surprise me if that’s worth a good $80k.

Our starting point was also probably closer to $3.0m than $3.2m because we never replaced O’Neill (who had a 25% loyalty allowance), and we probably have a further $50k banked from not paying him the last 4 months of his 2019-20 salary.

I remember thinking $2.1 million over three years was a ridiculous amount to be throwing at Kosta. with a more reasonable figure being $750-900k over three years.

Kosta has been our biggest recruiting misstep but if that’s as bad as it gets we’re doing very well.

Kosta is nothing compared to Jamie Coyne and Thiago Calvano. Stop whinging.

Very opportunistic for him. Given he has mentioned the closeness of the German international school along Mona Vale Rd, for his family to take advantage of to where they live. Stay in Aus, win the A-league, within a great environment of a team and club. Wouldn’t anyone…

Western United CEO confirmed Burgess will not be leaving so seems like Bobo is the only possible signing this season.

Fallacy of relative privation. The fact it’s not as bad as previous signings is irrelevant.

Assessing the quality of a signing in direct comparison to other signings is irrelevant?Completely disagree with you.

All the shit being heaped on the club for Kosta is hilarious. Don’t recall any of this when he was signed…

To be fair, he hadn’t been playing shit for 2 seasons when we signed him. Now however…
