Squad speculation thread 2020/21

Luckily I’ve retired from International football also so that leaves a spot open for all of you.

(Urgh, missed hilly making the joke)

Understandable - he doesn’t make many so they’re easy to miss…

Fuck off.

I’m fucking hilarious!

Okay, now I’m hallucinating.

Must just be keeping fit with our squad, right?

Yes. It’s not uncommon for players out of contract to train with a former club in order to maintain fitness levels until they sign a new contract elsewhere.
Given the strong links between Danny, SFC and the Socceroos coaching team it’s hardly surprising that he has wound up training with us.

Can we assume then that he’s just waiting to sign for another European club next season and not going to another AL club?

No.
He will sign the contract that is best for both him and his family. Who knows whether that is in Australia or overseas. At the end of the day he’s 36yo so there may not be a whole lot of overseas interest and what interest there is may not be that appealing to him.

He’s contracted till the end of the Belgian season so wouldn’t be able to move to an A League club (if he wanted), till next season.

Pretty sure Danny said he wants to come home. So it makes sense for him to keep fit over here and push to get a contract for next year.

He’s contracted, but it sounds like it’s more as a sign of good faith by the club. I don’t see them asking for a transfer fee or anything like that. The moment he’s offered a contract, they’ll more than likely cancel there’s.

The interview he did with the ABC Football Podcast said that they paid him till the end of the season and he didn’t think it was right to look at a club now until his obligation was complete.

Isn’t it the case that because he was contracted when the transfer window closed he has to wait until the transfer window in the country that he wants to move to is open before he can join a club there regardless of whether his contract has been cancelled/paid out or not?

I thought if it’s cancelled on a mutual then you’re good to go?

I’m guessing he was paid lump sum? Otherwise that’s just weird as the club is very open with them being happy to move him on

The club agreed that he was able to go home and was paid a lump sum till the end of the season. The impression I got from the interview was that he didn’t want to fark up the relationship he has with the club by going somewhere else till the contract would have ended.

Nice feature from the club on Wood. One of our own

Mat Leckie is leaving Hertha at the end of the season and hasn’t ruled out moving back to Australia citing the Covid situation here as a big positive to coming home.
He’d be perfect for that RM/RW position and we should have a slot available for a player outside the cap.

Dont think he fits the current system at all. He’d be far more likely to fit the role Kosta plays rather than the right attacking mid role. If we went to a 4-2-3-1, Leckie would be a great option on the right though.

Leckie’s also never been much of a goal scorer (50ish goals in 300 professional games and about 10 in 60 national caps) and with our inability to take our chances, signing Leckie would probably need to be linked with signing a proper 9 and a goal scoring attacking mid replacement for ABJ to work.

I’d be happy with Leckie as a ABJ replacement and SOMEONE as a Alfie/Bobo replacement. It’s not as if ABJ is banging goals in or getting assists each game.
