Along with bringing the average age down we really need to address how much pace has been lost from the squad over the last 3 years.
Imagine amini and bratts together [randymarsh.jpg]
I still reckon we should have had a crack at signing Davilla in the off season - would have been expensive and we no doubt would have had to move things around or players on - but would have been worth it IMO
No thanks our signings from other teams never seem to work out.
We signed Holosko from an other team and he worked out ok.
Brandon O’Neill was ok too.
Just in the squad right now we have Wilkinson, Kosta, Caceres, Redmayne, Zullo, Brattan & Retre all signed from A-League teams and I would consider them unqualified successful signings.
Kosta and abj signings were very frustrating. Both players looked amazing in their respective teams. Both didn’t perform anywhere near expectations at Sydney.
Sydney needs more unknown players and hope for the best rather then safe over priced players that will likely let us down. Davilla will make us pay a fortune for him and then he will just sit back and relax
They were key players in a double winning season in their first season at the club.
People seem to think contract negotiations are always quick and thus reflect what is happening now. My guess is that the whole scouting, due diligence, fitness testing, contract negotiation process can take many weeks and even months. So a couple of months ago we had Hof and Yazbek at DM, with Retre and maybe Caceres plus Amini’s signing virtually done. Plenty of cover. Now with the first two injured over weeks, we seem very short there.
On the other hand a couple of months ago, it was unclear if Kosta would be back and when, Alf was still injured and Bobo was just coming back and barely fit. Ninko was struggling a bit, Burgess was a bit up and down and Trent’s goal scoring was debatable.
Maybe we signed Luciano because at that time, it looked like we were really threadbare in attack. Now we know different. Wisdom of hindsight.
I think it’s for that reason that you can’t be as reactive as you’ve described, with your signings.
They wouldn’t have made this signing on basis of a few weeks of poor form and some relatively short term injuries.
Have you actually ever watched a Sydney FC game in your life?
But if Luciano is a short-term signing - to end of season then it makes perfect sense given we did not know for sure when all those injured attacking players would be back.
If a couple of them had taken an extra few weeks to get back - or reinjured themselves - we would all be criticising the club for not anticipating the crisis and seeking a quality replacement. Damned if you do or you don’t.
Bit worried about Brattan’s state of mind with this long injury. The corn rows are back…
Is my memory really that bad?
Wasn’t Abj already displaced by Caceres by the end of his first season.
Kosta had an amazing season with Melbourne scoring 15. That halved in his first season with us.
I am pretty sure they have been the most complained about players besides retre on this forum in the last 2 years.
Anyways yes they played a part but that isn’t the point. We will pay a fortune for Davilla and it might not turn out exactly how we want like those two. I am sure we can find someone of the same quality for half the price.
The same is true of any player we sign, two out of 7 players not being as good as expected is hardly a disastrous outcome.
Kosta led the team for goal involvements in his first two seasons
Yeah, I think people forget how good Kosta was in that first season.
May have, but over the first 2 seasons, he probably leads in misses of clear cut chances.
