Streets of our town - the Sydney thread

Have not been in about 7 years but before there was nothing Chinese about it.

It was, might still be a venue where you have pelemni, garbage Russian and Kavkaz food but wash it down with endless shots and beer (rsa never existed there)

All of this whilst you have 80s Soviet disco music playing and fresh Russians, Ukrainians and Uzbeks trying to find themselves a partner here in Australia.

Same concept as Odessa Nights in Bondi, Romance in Kingsford and the old joint in Lidcombe however all have closed down as the new generation don’t need this.

A long time ago there was a Russian restaurant on Bondi Rd. I got ridiculously drunk there on vodka, which was good, because the food was shit.

Wasn’t there one somewhere in the city or nearby that was decorated with the onion domes from St. Basil’s Cathedral?

There was one on Bourke St in Surry Hills as well.
I swear it was a front for a brothel.

There was a russian place in kingsford just near nine ways back in the day. Had a rather authentic feel, indulged through a tasting menu where one dish was cabbage. Bunch of people drinking vodka straight from the bottle and dancing for a birthday. Was a good night.

Yep, the Coachmen.

Look, allegedly a front for a mafia group but the decor inside was top tier. Believe it is a pre-school now

We popped into there a few times over the years. You could see the steady change from a classy restaurant to a strip club. Started off with Russian Folk Dancers performing and the steady lost more and more clothes as the years went by

Powerball has jackpotted to 200m next Thursday. On a related note, I am buying an A League team next Friday

Who would you rather? Perth or Newcastle?

I wasn’t planning on actually paying the players so either of those 2 would be fine

Brisbane is probably your best bet then.

Buy Melbourne Victory and destroy them from within

Considering how dodgy their owners now, 777 Partners might do the job without your help.

My aunt walking around in Chatswood: “This is a SUBURB of Sydney!?”

She lives in the LA metro area, so the concept of cities within cities shouldn’t be TOO far-fetched for her.

The clubhouse for the Bonnyrigg White Eagles has a Chinese restaurant in it.

Lots of pubs and clubs around the country have a Chinese Restaurant as their Bistro. It’s quite common in rural areas where it’s just about the only way folks out in the sticks can experience something that’s not meat & two veg (despite the menu often having “Australian meals” on it, and the cuisine is about as authentic as a pair of crocs)

The point was, I was looking for a Russian restaurant, as aside from Stroganoff I’ve never really eaten Russian cuisine. So an authentic Russian club (whose websites in Russian) you would assume would serve actual Russian food (other than Vodka).

I like borscht.

That’s Ukrainian

I mean if you go by Putin, Russian and Ukraine are essentially the same thing? Kyiv Social is meant to be really really good

Had a newly arrived English guy who was shocked by it say “it’s like a little Hong Kong” - and not just referring to the large Chinese population there.

If she’s from LA maybe she’s surprised we’d call it a suburb? The Americans seem a bit inconsistent at times with that. Cross a river within a city and
nah that’s not New York any more. What kind of idiot would think that’s part of New York?!
