Have not been in about 7 years but before there was nothing Chinese about it.
It was, might still be a venue where you have pelemni, garbage Russian and Kavkaz food but wash it down with endless shots and beer (rsa never existed there)
All of this whilst you have 80s Soviet disco music playing and fresh Russians, Ukrainians and Uzbeks trying to find themselves a partner here in Australia.
Same concept as Odessa Nights in Bondi, Romance in Kingsford and the old joint in Lidcombe however all have closed down as the new generation donât need this.
There was a russian place in kingsford just near nine ways back in the day. Had a rather authentic feel, indulged through a tasting menu where one dish was cabbage. Bunch of people drinking vodka straight from the bottle and dancing for a birthday. Was a good night.
We popped into there a few times over the years. You could see the steady change from a classy restaurant to a strip club. Started off with Russian Folk Dancers performing and the steady lost more and more clothes as the years went byâŠ
Lots of pubs and clubs around the country have a Chinese Restaurant as their Bistro. Itâs quite common in rural areas where itâs just about the only way folks out in the sticks can experience something thatâs not meat & two veg (despite the menu often having âAustralian mealsâ on it, and the cuisine is about as authentic as a pair of crocs)
The point was, I was looking for a Russian restaurant, as aside from Stroganoff Iâve never really eaten Russian cuisine. So an authentic Russian club (whose websites in Russian) you would assume would serve actual Russian food (other than Vodka).
Had a newly arrived English guy who was shocked by it say âitâs like a little Hong Kongâ - and not just referring to the large Chinese population there.
If sheâs from LA maybe sheâs surprised weâd call it a suburb? The Americans seem a bit inconsistent at times with that. Cross a river within a city and ⊠nah thatâs not New York any more. What kind of idiot would think thatâs part of New York?!
