Streets of our town - the Sydney thread

I’m building in a new estate, there are people living in the estate who are complaining about all the land works and sand being blown about from the rest of the estate being built.

How the fuck did your house get built?

It really does have to happen. It’s completely fucked to have someone actually chose to move into an area and then complain because it’s not how the want it… Seriously need to GGF

Back in the 80"s, the Three Weeds in Rozelle wa one of the better luve mudic venues. Then in the space of 6 months, several lawyers (cunts) moved in nearby and the venue was gone.

the classic… buy above Luna park, then complain about luna park

It’s the courts and the councils be ding over backwards for these people that’s the bigger problem

Took the new metro for the 1st time the other day. Outstanding!

4 mins Barangaroo to North Sydney. Holy shitballs.

On a sadder note it’s long overdue to acknowledge the sad death of Marys burgers. I’ll never forget the first time walking through that unmarked door into what felt like Mos Eisley cantina, full of my kinda freaks. We smashed beers and huge juicy burgers and wings all nite whilst Appetite for Destruction and other awesome choons blasted in the background. It was always a fully immersive sensory experience. Fast forward to the other day, it had been a long time since I’d had a burger so i stopped into a Marys outlet. $23 later i was served a tiny squashed sad little burger that looked like it had been run over by a car. They didnt even bother to salt the fries. The burger would’ve been barely 1/3 of the size the old Marys burgers used to be. It tasted ok but it also took them a ridiculously long time to prepare, must’ve taken them 15-20 minutes and there was barely anyone eating there, the staff were literally all sitting on their phones, whilst generic R&B played softly in the background. I have no idea if the original Marys in Newtown is still operating and i don’t care. Wouldn’t surprise me if it was sold to investors years ago leading to the collapse in quality. They’ll never see another cent out of me. I’m sure this is old news to a lot of you (and others will think “old man yells at cloud”) but it’s always sad when you realise a great food institution of your city is completely dead. Not even Oporto went anywhere near as bad when they franchised.

EQ Mary’s is bad. Down near the quay ain’t so bad. Price stings though.

Was planning on catching the metro in to town this weekend for some beers. Yeah Nah, buses are running between Tallawong and Chatswood

Haven’t been to Marys in Newtown in ages. I think last time I was there was after our GF penalty win in 2017.

Good memories of that place.

I like taking people to that who haven’t been to the Newtown Marys, because they always assume it’s some sort of crack house with that exterior and give me a concerned look.

I’ve done the same.

Wasn’t it a former safe injecting room or something nefarious?

Lived 100m from Mary’s in Newtown for 5 years (2012-2017).

It was never good.
Owners were jerks, burgers were shit and the beer selection was poor and the staff couldn’t give a shit.
Always amazed me that they made it as big as they did.

The ex-wife and I gave them multiple tries and each time it was worse. No idea why people ever lined up for that shit.

The burgers were way too heavy on the tomato sauce

Burgers were good
Music was great

Their fried chicken was the best fried chicken I’ve ever eaten.

Their burgers were good. I didnt like the dingy lighting, the toilets were putrid, basically an open graffiti sewer, and they weren’t cheap but I never had a bad burger or chicken there

I used to go to the Newtown venue once a fortnight for about 5 years (14-19). Burgers were good and consistent, fried chicken was amazing, the music great and the staff excellent (agreed that the owners could be jerks, really depended on their ‘mood’). That was then.

These days the prices are very steep for what it is, a lot of venues are staffed by people who don’t really give a fuck and have no desire to interact with you (could be a generational / COVID / old man yells at cloud thing though). EQ venue is only ok and given the light rail there are plenty of other options, circular quay venue is solid and still run by one of the excellent staff (he’ll still put slayer or rob zombie on during the lunch rush if you ask).

Things change I guess

Anyone rate Bell’s Chicken for Chicken? I find the Melbourne CBD branch significantly better than the Tramsheds in Sydney very randomly. Definitely spicier over there

Only ever had it from Barangaroo but I rate it, particularly the burgers.

Yeah Belles Chicken has always been pretty decent
