Keeper sub!
Pretty even game.
We were all over them for most of the second half but they seemed fitter, ran us around for the last 10-15.
We were lucky to escape with a draw.
Referee had a pretty dodgy game.
My son and I realised this was our first game since a game against Canberra United in 2020.

The problem with women’s football here is that outside of probably four or five options (of which just about all of them are overseas), the level of Aussie keepers really drops off badly. Whyman was actually a poor keeper as well before joining us. Maybe with a few years, one of the current keepers will get to Whyman’s level. But we are taking some pain in the meantime.
I’d like to know how they go about the GK training.
The errors that we’re seeing are a failure of the basic skillset of a GK. Routine catches are being spilled into the net, they’re diving over the ball and overall poor technique on display.
All of these skills are reinforced through repetition and anyone playing at the top level in this country should have a complete grasp of these fundamentals.
I’ve got no idea how they make it so far when they’re no better than park level.

It probably doesn’t help either that Edwards looks about 5 feet tall.
Im assuming because theyre essentially semi pro or theyre coming off of being semi pro? Doesnt half our tram have second jobs?
Male NPL GK’s wouldn’t get away with these errors.
I get that they’re part time but they literally can’t catch a ball. I refuse to believe that they are the best that are out there.
We’re not the only side that has this problem though. There is something seriously wrong with the way we’re identifying and coaching our “talented” female GK’s.

In all the alw matches I’ve watched it’s the basics from keepers that are pretty bad.
Wild theory, the types of taller, more physical players that would previously been goalkeepers are playing alfw or nrlw.
I think you’re right and I’ve suspected the same thing.
There was a period there where the girls could choose netball or GK which require a very similar skillset. Now they’ve got AFLW and I’d also throw Cricket into the equation as a tall woman with good hand eye coordination can make a living off T20.
Either way, we just don’t appear to be identifying the correct players to fill the role.

We need to be holding onto Matildas keepers post-playing days to get the right coaching in, if we aren’t already. You’d think young keepers would give a hell of a lot to get some coaching off luminaries like Lydia Williams.

And that was a wonderful second goal
Genuinely could’ve had 4 or 5 by now. But got pretty lucky with Heyman shooting straight at the keeper earlier.
No idea how that Canberra free kick did not go in.

Reckon that might be it for tonight. Had a massive storm roll through Bathurst about an hour ago, and the map doesn’t look promising…
What are the lightning rules? I can’t find them online but I am to remember 30 minutes after last strike within 5 or 10km?
